DVD Player 5.6.1 broken

I've just tried to play a DVD on my new MacBook Air. I'm using the apple 'MacBook Air SuperDrive' external dvd drive plugged directly into my laptop USB socket. When I insert a DVD - I've tried several - the DVD player launches, then immediately crashes. If I launch the player first it is fine until I insert the DVD, then it crashes. I can view the contents of the DVD using finder so I assume that the drive is working correctly and that the DVDs are fine.

The problem report is always the same. Am I doing something wrong? If this is a bug its a pretty obvious one - surely it would have been picked up by Apple's QA? Do I just wait for apple to fix their software?

Start of problem report is below. Because it is so long I've removed most of it as it is mostly stack traces. Near the bottom there is this line though: USB Device: MacBook Air SuperDrive, apple_vendor_id, 0x1500, 0x1a120000 / 4

Living in the UK I went to bed shortly after posting, woke up this morning and - there's lots of helpful responses. How nice!

Down to business.

Having been asked for the stack trace for Thread 0 I tried to reproduce the fault today... and I can't. Doesn't matter what I do, it works. Tried all the DVDs that failed last night - they're commercial DVDs not copies.

Plugged the drive in to both USB ports. Plugged my Apple monitor into the Thuderbolt port. Ran both laptop and monitor together - with the DVD Player displaying on one, then the other. Closed my laptop and just used the monitor. Plugged the DVD drive into the USB port on the montor. It all works perfectly. (And I'm impressed at how well).

The only explanation I have is that having posted last night I found another thread that suggested using the Mackintosh Disk Utility to check permissions. So I tried it. The tool did find some permissions problems which it fixed. At the time it didn't appear to have any effect on the DVD Player. It still crashed. What I had not done though was reboot after using the utility. So, my guess is that fixing the permissions and rebooting (shutting down and then trying to reproduce it this evening) did the trick.

I've no idea why this should work. It could be coincidence, but I no longer have a problem.

Perhaps manilx could try this and see what happens?

Thank you everyone for your help. Eric.

I just fixed my issue - I inserted a store bought movie DVD (not one that I burned) and after it played for the first time, I then inserted the DVD that I had just burned and the player did not crash this time. Not sure why - perhaps the DVD Player had to initiate it's location setting with a valid DVD during the first time playing... either way, try that if you are still having issues.

I'm having the same problem - almost brand new (as in: it was delivered last Friday from Apple) MacBook Pro, but it won't play a DVD. DVD player will start if no disk is inserted, but crashes whenever a DVD is inserted, the player crashes (just for the record, this happens with any DVD, and all are non-burned - straight from the store). The DVD mounts but won't play. Audio CDs play just fine.

I tried the "repair permissions and then restart" described above, but no soap.

Thanks

I just got my MBP W/ retina display last week. Also running the external USB Super Drive plugged into the USB3 port. Having the exact same problem. Every time I insert a DVD (regardless of the DVD), DVD Player (Version 5.6.1) opens and then "Quits unexpectedly" almost immediately.

I think it's safe to say that the newest versions of DVD Player have some serious bugs that need to be fixed. Either that or it's an OSx issue. Is anyone who is having this problem running anything besides Mountain Lion?

Hopefully this is something Apple can fix quickly with an update.

Yep, IDVD has got the latest software update installed. I called Applecare. We went through the usual checklist of fixing permissions, PRAM reset. The guy suggested it might be a hardware issue but I'm ruling that out as it's a brand new superdrive that burns IDVDs fine. He did admit that some people have been having problems with DVD player on Mountain Lion.

On his suggestion I downloaded VLC PLAYER. It doesn't crash the DVD like Apple DVD Player does, but it won't play DVDs either.

Hope they come up with a big fix fast...
