Can't find the appropriate OS.

Check sites such as Amazon or eBay for a retail 10.5 DVD.

so i have to "buy" a new OS? doesn't seem right.

Subtle difference I know, but an "update" applies within a major OS X version. Those are free.
An "upgrade" applies to a major OS release, such as from OS X 10.4.11 to OS X 10.5 as you indicated. Those must be purchased.
This has always been the case with OS X.
