FaceTime over AT&T service not WiFi

I was just reading the NEW features of Face Time with your cell service in the absence of WiFi. However, I get the same message I use to get before I upgraded to IOS 6.0, is anyone having the same problem.

I have tried it with my IPAD3 with AT&T and my iPHONE 4S and I get the same message. If I understand what I am reading, I should be able to use FaceTime when I don't have WiFi available.

Thanks

Sorry I am responding to everyone who has brought this issue up to make sure that the word gets out. I am glad to see that this is getting noticed. I went thru this today

AT&T wants to charge for it. Also caution: If you are "grandfathered" into an unlimited data plan and switch to a new "termed" data plan just to get face time available without wifi your unlimited data plan is no longer valid. Also note that AT&T no longer offers an unlimited data plan at this time so you cannot get it back

I downloaded IOS6 and turned my wifi off and tried facetime. It advised that I need to contact AT&T to make sure I had the applicable data plan.

I had an interesting conversation with AT&T today. They told me that I had to sign up for a new plan.

They fully admit that Facetime is interent based and goes over the internet when connected to wifi. I responded that when wifi is turned off, it goes thru the internet on the phone which is data. Since I have unlimited data they are now restricting my unlimited data. They won't deny that. They only state that AT&T offers a new plan which allows you to use facetime without wifi. I believe it was called "mobile sharing"

I escalated to three different supervisors until there wasn't a higher one present. They commited to have someone call me back tomorrow. I asked that take this as a formal complaint. I also advised that I would be contacting the BBB as they have stepped over the bounds of ethichal behavior.

I Agree AT&T has gone to far with this! I have 4 iPhone on my acount ALL of which are iPhone 4 and above which means all are capable of FaceTime I do not believe it is fair that AT&T should be aloud to tell me or anyone else how they use their data. Also to switch to a mobile share plan would cost me and my family plan over $350 in just DATA alone that would EASILY double my current monthly bill since me and my family are high data users we ALWAYS use our monthly allowance and nothing more to avoid overage! There are some public interest groups that are out there that are fighting AT&T about this saying it violates the FCC Net Neutrality Rules I can only hope AT&T gets smart about this and changes there mind or that these public interest group win their case.

How would it cost this in DATA alone since you cannot get DATA alone?

AT&T with 4 iPhones sharing 20GB data is $320 (with $15 per GB after that).

So you are each using at least 5.5 GB data each month?

When I first got my iphone 5 I was able to use FaceTime over 4G and LTE. Now they have arbitrarily set it to that you need a "shared plan." I found this out just today and complained to AT&T's resolution department.

I currently have two iphones and a non-smartphone phone. Pay $147.97/mo. One iphone is unlimited, one is 3GB and there is shared 550 minutes and unlimited texting between phones. AT&T wants me to pay $90 for unlimited text and talk, 6GB shared data and each iphone is $35 and each other phone is $30. The new total would be 90+35+35+30=$190 BEFORE taxes. Probably lookinga t $210 if not more after taxes and other charges. So for an additional $60 they will allow me to use a HARDWARE feature of the phone that they arbitrarily decided to not let me use unless I go to some stupid plan that costs me way more money for more minutes but less data? That makes no sense.

I wish I had known this BEFORE I agreed to a two year deal. I wonder if they will let me return my phone since, in my opinion, they broke the contract on their side.

I have the same problem, I called AT&T and the answer is very disappointed to users : face time works

via cellular data ONLY with family plan otherwise we have to use wifi !!! I complained about this but

I don't know they correct this issue or they just want people pay more for family plan . This is suck .

We have to write something to Consumer Report the limitation of Face Time functionality as Apple promissed !
