my ipod won't show anything. It just displays a message about contacting support.

Does anyone have any suggestions what to do, short of buying a new one?

Yeah there is a red X, with the apple.com/support attached to it. It gives a clicking sound also. I can't do anything with it. I tried plugging it in and nothing happened. I am wondering if I need a new battery, but I don't recall this problem on one of my other iPods when I needed a battery. How hard is it to pull out the battery, and where do you get one besides apple?

It could be the battery, but more often than not, it's the iPod's hard drive.

There are several online retailers who offer replacement parts for iPods. I tend to stick with iFixit even though they are priced a bit higher. However, each part contains a step-by-step guide on how to swap it out.
