Q: Yesterday I updated my software on OS X 10.6.8.  Since then, my Mail has been corrupted and will not open.  I should have version 4.6 of Mail.  But, all that is there is version 4.2.  It cannot be opened,  & the original version of Mail 4.6 is missing.

I can no longer find Mail.  The only version of Mail is 4.2.  My system will not open it.  The Mail version 4.6 is missing, gone, hiding, or whatever.  Please help me find it or re-install  it.

Are you now seeing two versions of Mail in Applications?

Try moving the small 8.1MB Mail.app to the Trash. But don't empty it. Then download and install the Security Update again. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586

If that doesn't work, use File>Put Back for the one in the Trash and see this post and the two following it. If you get another small one as a result, you can keep working with that one for this workaround. You won't need the one from the Trash.

Wow this worked perfectly thank you. All I had to do was install the security update above. But I don't remember ever doing it before? Anyway, when I did the last update not only did my mail stop working but my printer as well. Now after doing the security update both of them work. Thanks again.

    To all above glitches,

It's ok to leave the mail icons where they are in the Apps folder. They will get sorted out.

If you can't find Mail, use spotlight (the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of your menu bar to search for it and return it to the Application folder before doing the update, if possible.

BTW- FOR ALL READERS: YOUR DOCK IS WHERE YOU WANT THE SHORTCUTS TO YOUR APPLICATIONS. I DO NOT ADVISE PUTTING APPLICATIONS ON YOUR DESKTOP AS THEY WILL NOT UPDATE PROPERLY AND THE DOCK WILL POINT TO THE OLD ONES AND NOT THE NEW ONES, CAUSING MORE PROBLEMS AND DUPLICATE APPS. We've seen many issues caused by moving apps around.
