You might like to look at Herald - http://erikhinterbichler.com/software/herald/ . It's very similar to Mail Appetizer but its author has taken the trouble to keep it up to date - follow the link for version 1.3.3: this works with the latest security update.
The main difference from Mail Appetizer is that you need to keep the mail window minimized, rather than hidden, or it will pop up every time there is a notification (unless he's fixed that, it was the case earlier). Otherwise it's pretty well identical (and free).
