Dec 5, 2012 10:18 AM in response to Drumbogleby honeybeebuzz,I just got airplay speakers and was excited to see what I could do with them. I was able to stream music from computer or iPad just fine. Check. I was also able to stream audio from iPad for Netflix, iTunes video (but not Amazon Prime). Check. So I thought it would be great to watch a movie on AppleTV with audio from the speaker. I saw on the AppleTV menu the airplay choice of speakers and thought it would work like the iPad, but it didn't. It only works with the music. It doesn't make sense to me that I can do it with my iPad and not with the AppleTV. The iPad can only send the sound to one device at a time. I cannot put on airplay/mirroring for the AppleTV and speaker at the same time. Too bad I can't mirror the video and airplay the sound to the speaker. Oh, well. The computer says it will send audio to multiple devices, but it only works with music also. Would love a solution to this.

Jan 1, 2013 7:18 AM in response to honeybeebuzzby AppleTvvv,The best solution is to buy an optical to analog DAC, connect it to the optical output of apple tv and then get the output of RCA to your amp to run your speakers.
This is what i have got. You will get much better sound than the airport express (This uses lots of hi-fi grade components, rather than just a chip build in AE). Now i only use the airport express as router, nothing else.

Feb 21, 2013 11:24 AM in response to honeybeebuzzby honeybeebuzz, update to my previous post. I did the update for the AppleTV and now I do get audio to my airplay speakers while the video plays through the TV (streaming from iPad). Note though that this works only for the video in my iTunes folders. Right now I've only tested it using the iPad, not the computer. So iTunes video works with the airplay speakers, however the other video from apps on the iPad still does not send audio to the speaker.
However, when I use Netflix or the other things on the AppleTV it does send the audio to the airplay speaker while playing the video through the TV. Now if AppleTV carried more apps like the Roku that would be awesome!
So the update is an good improvement. It would be great when the other apps can also stream the audio to the speakers while the video is mirrored on AppleTV.

Apr 4, 2013 8:27 AM in response to Drumbogleby Thabo Da Husky,I am a somewhat newbie to the big screen TV / Apple TV / Airport Express game. I have just aquired an old 42 inch Plasma and of course attached my ATV and old analog Marantz reveiver. Of course I was a little miffed as I now had to route the hdmi audio out of the back of the TV into the amp. So I decided to use an older generation airport express to route the audio from the apple TV to the airport express then onto the amp and it worked great - well it seemed to!
The problem is reliability, sometime the apple TV just decides to swtich back to it being the default sound source - Setting > Airplay > Speakers - very annoying. And it seems that if I try to AirPlay from my mac book air to the apple TV, the video is fine but the sound never gets routed to the airport express! On netflix it works fine but some movies it just refuses to airplay the audio (perhas the audio is dolby surround) but these TV shows are in my iTunes library (5th Gear TV show from UK) We also use the Airport express (that's connected to the Apple TV) as a stand alone streamer - in the morning we just want to stream music form an iPad or iPHone , TV is off, so perhaps this confuse the Apple TV.
My 2c - the solution is to obviousely get a digital to analog audio converter but another $50 ....... ;(
Interested to see if this problem is perhaps related to the airport express being an older type that plugs direcly into the power brick.
(Side not for those techies - streaming 154Mbps AVCHD video from laptop to Apple TV works ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlq5aIblUBI ) Airplay rocks! )

Jul 1, 2013 6:37 PM in response to AppleTvvvby BobRichardson,I am using a Gefen, Dolby Digital, Digital to Analog converter to get the audio into my receiver. For some reason, at the same volume on the speaker, the music audio is dramatically louder than the video audio. I am using the the converter for an outdoor solution, so the lack of volume is an issue. Have you noticed any issue with converter?

Feb 10, 2014 2:54 AM in response to honeybeebuzzby Oliver164,Any updates on this? Would love to watch films from Netflix or by mirroring my laptop through Apple TV while hearing the audio on my stereo connected to my airport express. Hope that's possible. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Feb 11, 2014 7:40 AM in response to Oliver164by rdrushton,Oliver, with software update 5.2 (released ~ Feb 2013) this functionality is now available. I watch Netflix on my Apple TV via the built in Netflix channel and use Airplay to stream the audio to speakers on an Airport Express.

Mar 8, 2014 10:01 AM in response to Drumbogleby Nimuie,So, this is the problem i got using both Apple TV and Airport Express.
The apple TV is connected through Ethernet cable to the Airport Express. To the Airport Express i have connected my speakers. Now, streaming a video/movie from iTunes (MBP Early 2011) on my Monitor (Samsung S24B370) using AirPlay and the Apple TV works... the thing is that the volume is extremly low (i am using my speakers => streaming audio to Apple TV and the Apple TV is set to use the AirPlay speakers)
What this means is that with the volume of the speakers set at MAX i can barely hear the sound of a movie. The strange this is, everything else sounds perfectly (music, youtube, etc.)
Any ideas?
