I've had my iPhone 5 for 3 days and the speaker problem started on day 2. The caller can hear me but I can't hear them on the internal speaker, I have to use the loudspeaker (hands free) to hear them. Tried restarting and rebooting the phone but still have the same problem. Need to take it in to apple for repair which is really annoying. Anyone else found a fix for this?

I have this very same problem. Tried clearing and restoring the iPhone but it didn't solve the problem.
Like some of you, it was working fine for about 3 days then suddenly no sound from the earpiece speaker during calls. I can only do calls using the speakerphone or the headset.
Hope Apple can give us an update on this soon.
Same problem, started on day 4. Extremely frustrated as I made an appt with apple care and when I showed up...it started working again. Apple care rep reset my network settings, but I'm not sure if that solved it or not. Appears intermittent and assuming we'll have to wait until they prove its a SW or HW issue.
I'm going to post this where ever I see this issue come up online.
Same issues here. Black 32gb iphone 5, preordered at midnight. I had call quality issues out of the box and then the speaker cut out for good. Mine is also not stuck in headphone mode, it is just a iphone 5 with manufacturing issues. Have any of you tried getting a replacement yet? Apples customer service is a joke unless you live near an apple store. (Which i do not) Now I have to come up with $700 to put onto my account before Apple can trust ME to send my iphone back for a replacement. I put my trust in apple when I waited 2 years for this phone and preordered with money that could have gone towards a phone that actually functions as a phone. I hope someone reads this, apple needs to make this right.
I took my phone in to apple to get it fixed. I was served one hour after my appointment time. They tried restoring the firmware but that didn't fix the problem. The speaker needed to be replaced but since the phone was so new they didn't have the right tools to open it up so I was given a new phone. This was really annoying cause I had to reinstall all my apps, contacts, music, etc and waste my data usage on my phone plan. New phone works fine, so far.
They get your security deposit AND your phone? Doesn't make sense to me. In what circumstances would they keep your deposit?
Went to apple store, had a replacment phone in 2 days.
Same issue here. I think it is a hardware problem...if I push on the glass near the speaker the audio cuts in and out. Must be loose connections. Making appointment for the Genius Bar now...
I posted this somewhere else in the forum.
I have a black 32g iPhone 5.
The speakers sometimes work and sometimes do not. When it is not functioning, my alarm won't work, neither will my music, any of my notifications, nor will my calls on loud speakers. When it works, it works.
I went to the Apple store Genius Bar to tell/show them my problem and because it was working at the time, they couldn't do anything, but note it in my log. I have to go in when it is not working, which can be at any time. I can't hang around the store hoping it doesn't work around them.
It is the fourth day that my alarm has not gone off to wake me for work.
I am getting super frustrated. This is my first iPhone.
It seems that I have been more problems than it is worth.
Just got my iphone 5 32gb today and I have no sound out of the built in speakers on any of my apps I downloaded from the app store.
Whats going on?
I have a white 32GB iphone 5. The speaker works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. I cant hear alarms, phone calls etc on speaker. I tried switching between the headset and speaker mode repeatedly but to no result. it is frustrating because now i keep missing calls because I cant hear them
Just went to apple store and they replaced my phone with a new one. The apple care assistant didn't hesitate about the swap, but when asked, couldn't confirm that it was a wide spread issue.
I had my iphone for one month and the problem started where I couldn't make a call and I couldn't receive calls. I took it to the Verizon store and they told me I had to take it to an apple store which was over an hour away. I asked if there was something else I can do so they traded it for a samsung Galaxy s3 because my husband was due for an upgrade. The sales rep told me they are having a lot of trouble with the internal speakers on the iphone 5. So far I love the Galaxy better and the rep told me it's a much better phone.
I have the same issue. iPhone 5 black, 64 gb. I reset the network settings, restore to factory defaults and i couldn't fix it. Only work with loud speaker. So i'll ask for warranty.
I've had exactly the same problem for the last few months. Speakerphone works, headphones work, internal speaker rarely works. Tried all the rebooting, restore as new iPhone and cleaning the hole where you plug your headphone jack. Nothing worked. I read one user tried pressing down and putting some pressure around the speaker, this worked for me. I press the area again and the speaker goes silent again. I've done this about twenty times now, each time the pressure turns off and then turns on the speaker. Will go to Apple and show them the exact problem. This shouldn't be happening. Give it a try, hope it works.
From reading many replies, it is quite apparent there is a significant issue with the internal speaker system on the IPHONE 5, regardless of the response we receive from any rep at the Apple Store. I will be carting my own, speaker-deficient phone into the Apple store tomorrow to, most likely, just be issued another one. I read a post about pushing on the screen near the bottom to coax the speaker to life and it works like a charm. However, even with the infinite depth of patience I seem to have acquired in the past five decades, I find this problem to be a bit annoying, so off to the Store I go. Not sure if this is actually a hardware design issue, seems to be from having to actually push on the screen to get it to work, or a software gig. If it's the latter, then we all will be in luck as it will only be a matter of time before Apple engineers can come up with a fix. A hardware issue may take a few more exchanges at the Store before they can get the new hardware into circulation. Bottom line, all is well and if this is the most inconvenient thing I find in my life, I will consider myself to be the luckiest guy on the planet - like I am not already.
