I just posted a rather long discussion/answer as I had this issue too. I believe you had another question on this but that answer did not work (delete cache.plist) but gave me the idea like the answer above from Bengt Warleby. You need to see my discussion on this as I detailed the two files to delete which fixed my problem! The title of my post is: iMovie '11 the audio stopped working and pictures freezing over several clips

Hope this helps!!

I'm really frustrated. After "working" for two days it no longer works and the fix of deleting Cache and Preferences that did work, the first time, (from Apply Support) don't have any affect. As I look at other comments on the community and this seems to have been a problem for awhile, like years. I'm using the same camera and the same computer so looks to me like something in the software is going nuts (highly technical term). For example, I have one video clip that will not play the audio. When I put my curser on it the picture is not of that clip but changes to another unrelated photo. Try again and you get a different picture from that! So whatever is going on is really random. It is not consistent so I think all who are having this problem find it difficult to describe.

Is this just related to photos - or both video and photos - or put in another way

Is this just related to material imported from iPhoto (as this can hold video too) or does this affect all material used (even from outside iPhoto)

As iMovie do not copy material over to project but only relates (points) to needed photos/videos in iPhoto Library any corruption to this also set's iMovie in a troublesome situation.

If So

Medicine:

• Stop all programs running - or re-start Mac

• Start iPhoto - BUT KEEP alt- and cmd-key down during Up-Start

• Now You got a lot to select from - Select All

Beware ! - This will take LOT'S of time - 6 to 12 hours not uncommon to me

• If laptop - connect Mains-Adaptor - battery might not last long enough

• Let it be - no other programs running - so that no sudden Quit's etc might interfere with this restore process.

Bengt W,

I appreciate your help. Yes, all my photo and videos are originating from iPhoto '11 (that is how my camera imports). I did exactly as you describe above and I was able to complete the movie and make a DVD that I needed for Christmas? SO that was great. And I greatly appreciate your time and efforts to make that happen.

However, we are back to the same problems and nothing seems to fix these movies now and they are still doing the same thing described above. I am so discouraged that I just have not done anything more until recently.

Yesterday, iPhoto just disappeared. I had iMovie open overnight. The next day the iPhoto icon had a circle with a diagonal line and when I clicked on the icon "Damaged or corrupted ..." was the message. I checked Finder and there was no longer an iPhoto application! I reinstalled iPhoto from my DVD and did updates but only got to version 9.2.3. Then I noted in the Apple store there is a version 9.4.2. But I cannot get that version because it requires OS 10.7.5 but I have 10.6.8. Similar problem with iMovie, I have version 9.0.4 and the newest is 9.0.8.

I have watched the "reviews" of these new OS, iPhoto, and iMovie. They are getting hammered by users with a wide range of problems and low ratings. If that were not the case I would just pay the money and see if upgrading the OS and these apps would help. Frankly, I don't have any confidence it would. I about to declare my two year experiment with Apple as a failure and that is very sad because I've invested hundreds of hours trying to make/keep their software working. Ultimately the market place will decide but recent user feedback sure seems to point to some ugly outcomes. Sorry for my rant but Apple should not impose on folks like you who are so giving to overcome their product shortcomings.

This is a repost of the reply to another discussion item because I think it finally fixed my problem and thought it might help others.

"imoviebill,

You are my new hero! I've had this type of issue with the audio and clips hanging for some time. All manner of advice and fixes. Some would work once but then back to the same issues. Very frustrating.

I looked at my video clips in iPhoto and they are in fact h.264. So in iMovie I selected the 34 clips in my current "movie from ****" and did the Optimization. Seems to take awhile so left it overnight. Today, my movie works as it should! You cannot image my relief!

I suspect that when I initially imported the clips that it may have asked (in iPhoto or iMovie) if I wanted to "optimize" and I did not because I did not know what that would do for me. So it is a self-inflicted wound."
