i-mac 27'' late 2009 external display for an Ati radeon 5850 gpu problems

I have an i-mac 27 inch late 2009
There is the possibility of connecting with desktop computer whose graphics card has a Displayport output to use the imac as an external screen.

I also own an intel i7 desktop with an ASUS ATI radeon 5850 graphics card with the Displayport output.
After many attempts to connect the imac as an external display (with a midi display port to display port adapter), pressing the combination of keys on Snow Leopard (Command + F2) with no success. The imac shows that attempts to connect without success.
Do you know how to solve this problem;
Is there a list of compatible graphics cards to perform successfully connection between the desktop and imac?
