Sync the music to your iphone 5 using itunes. That's where your music is stored.
All of your music should be on your computer. If it is not, then put it there.

Doesn't address the question. Of course my music library is on my computer via iTunes, but I'm trying to copy the MANY downloaded music files and playlists currently on my 3G to my new 5. How do I make a copy of these iPhone 3G Music items to copy to 5?
Back it up to itunes. Then your backup copy will be available for "restore from backup". Just make sure all music and playlists are checked to be sync'd"
I used an application called SharePod to get music from my iPhone 3GS to my laptop, then I used that to put onto my 4S. It's not the greatest application but it is good. You need this application on your laptop/pc http://www.getsharepod.com/

You can transfer songs from iphone 3gs to iphone 5 in 2 ways.
1. Through bluetooth.
2. Through USB cable.
+++ Steps to transfer songs from old iphone 3gs to new iphone 5 :
1. Connect the two iphone using the USB cable.
2. Now go to the iTunes and in iTunes select the devices.
3. In devices select and tap the iphone.
4. Now go to the place where songs are stored in iphone.
5. Now select the songs which you want to transfer.
6. After selecting press the transfer button.
Wait until the songs transfer.After transfering disconnect the ipod from mac computer.
