Q: Upgrade memory

I have a 20inch mid 2007 iMac and have never upgraded memory before.  It is a 1GB machine and I tried to upgrade it to Mountain Lion only to discover that it needs 2GB.  If I open new software like iPhoto or Office for MAC it can take ages to open them, but when open it generally works OK.

Do i really need to upgrade it to preferably 4GB for Mountain Lion to stop it getting obsolete and make it run better?  Will I notice a difference in how it runs? It looks fairly straightforward here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423#2 is it something a novice can do themselves?

Keep it simple - I don't know anything about this kind of thing!

Thanks.
