I work in an office that has no cell phone reception. I can message other iphone users through wifi, but I would like to use imessage to send SMS to an android phone through wifi. Why doesn't this happen automatically? Is there a way to make it work easily?

iMessage can only be sent to other iOS devices. Android is not one of those so it cannot be done.
Use GoogleVoice. Or go online to your mobile providers website, most of them allow you to send texts from there.
There is an android app called MightyText that allows iMessage integration. Have your coworkers try it out. Also neat feature is allowing SMS from a computer
While i understnad what ANFoley means by "MightyText that allows iMessage Integration", to be clear -- MightyText is "like" iMessage in that it connects an Android phone to a tablet and an online interface. it does not work in any way with the imessage technology that apple incorporates, nor does it route imessages to an android phone.

That BBC announcement does mean that Blackberry will talk to Android and iOS, and iOS can talk to Blackberry, but it does NOT mean that iOS can talk to Android.
I figured it had to be. I'm wondering if there's a way to have my Android phone 'hook into' Messages by adding it as an email address (mymobilenumber@txt.att.net, in my case). I'm trying, but when Apple sends the verification email it's split into multiple text messages (because of the 160 character SMS limit). I tried stiching it together, but when I go to the url it says "we cannot verify the email with this link"...
How do you think this is logical ? They are competing with whatsapp, facebook chat and skype .. If it is not cross-platform it has no chance of succeeding in market penetration...Please review your sources before starting speculations.
I think you will find that the original question was about iMessage talking to Android. I think I answered that question. Nothing about Skype, Facebook, Whatsapp etc
