How can I edit over 3000 songs with no current ID3 tags? They all show up as [Artist-Partial Album Name...] in the song title space, with no song titles in sight. Is there a free application I can download that can identify these songs and rename them all?

Extra info...all these songs are currently in my iTunes and on my iPod Touch. I want to edit them and add the newly labelled songs to my iPhone 4S. Not sure if that's at all helpful to know.

Thanks!

Do the file names make sense? I don't know about Windows but for Mac iTunes there are scripts and third party utilities which will parse a file name and use it to label tracks.

Do a general web search for programs that can identify tracks based upon audio fingerprints. This question gets asked occasionally and I don't think there are any great services that will do it though some have attempted (e.g. Music Brainz).

The file name will be like 'Enigma - MCMXC a.D. -The Limited Edi 13." It doesn't always list the track number, though that was helpful when I was trying to manually edit each song.

I tried searching for programs, but what I found just edited already tagged songs. I haven't been able to find a program that will identify unknown songs, except for MusicBrainz...and that had very sparse results. It left most of the songs still unmatched and untagged. Grrrr...

As Limnos says I've written a few scripts for iTunes for Windows. Shuffling information around is one thing, however if the data isn't there then audio fingerprinting with MusicBraniz would be my next tack but it seems that isn't working for you. I've also used MediaMonkey's Auto-Tag from Web feature to flesh out partial info but having an album title and track numbers is a prerequisite. You also have to be prepared to fix one album at a time.

The best tool to rename files that have missing or bad ID3 tags is to use MusicBrainz Picard.

MusicBrainz Picard is a cross-platform (Linux/Mac OS X/Windows) application written in Python and is the official MusicBrainz tagger.

Picard supports the majority of audio file formats, is capable of using audio fingerprints (PUIDs, AcoustIDs), performing CD lookups and disc ID submissions, and it has excellent Unicode support. Additionally, there are several plugins available that extend Picard's features.

When tagging files, Picard uses an album-oriented approach. This approach allows it to utilize the MusicBrainz data as effectively as possible and correctly tag your music.
