The AirPort Extreme does not have a built-in modem ... either of the DSL or cable type. You will still need a modem in order to gain Internet access from your ISP.
We have a modem it's built in on the side of the house and the router the AT&T router is connected into a phone line jack and do you think if we unplugged it ad plugged in the airport router do you think it would work
The key is the line coming into the house. If your current AT&T router is connected to a phone line (RJ-11) then it must have a built-in DSL modem. Unfortunately, in this case, you cannot simply substitute the AirPort Extreme as it needs to be connected to an Ethernet line (RJ-45). You could; however, use both routers by connecting the Extreme to the AT&T by Ethernet, and then, reconfiguring the Extreme as a bridge.
