Unless you have used your phone GPS to do any of the below, then you do not have the right to "assume":

• Drive in the Irish Countryside (Where road signs are not always available and/or misleading).
• Give directions to someone driving in the crazy streets of Kolkatta or Hydrabad (India)
• drive in the mountains, roads, and narrow city alleyways of Lebanon (as "Crazy" as India driving).
• Find your way through the maze of streets that is London on a daily basis.
• ....List goes on, but the point is should be satisfied

I am pretty sure you have not done any of the above using your iPhone (because of your unfounded Claim that it costs thousands of dollars for data roaming). I personally use an AT&T International Unlimited Data Plan, that costs less than $60 extra/month (again not thousands) and I get 3G service in all of the countries I have traveled to and it is extremely practical to use cellular network for your Phone GPS needs (Apple Maps or Google Maps).

And No, the Google Maps using a browser is not the same (you cannot drop a pin at a location, and you lose the multiple routes function).

Please spare the people that are actually trying to find solutions to the problems, and only contribute when you have something productive to say...Telling everyone that our phone issues are simply a manifestation of our imagination is NOT productive by the way.

You just proved you are full of it. I travel internationally on a regular basis, and buy AT&T roaming data plans. AT&T has no plan that is unlimited at any price, and certainly not at $60/month. Strange, I have a business account with one of the largest companies in the world and I don't get that special rate. So buzz off, troll.

iOS 6 is a crock. Sure, there's tons of new features, but overall it's half-baked. First and foremost, the new Apple Maps app is an abomination. I've used it on my iPad and it just looks horrendous compared to the simplciity of the Google Maps app.

Any updates on sticking with 5.1.1? I have 5.1.1 currently but the software is misbehaving (camera doesn't open very often, will usually crash).

I'd like to restore it, but I do not want iOS 6 for a variety of reasons. The main reason is Maps for public transit, as we have no local App option here. And no, the solution is not to go back to Google Maps in Safari. I used to do that in 2007, on the original iPhone.

I purchased this iPhone 4 with a specific set of software on it, with a certain expectation of how it would run. I don't feel a company should be allowed to remove functionality that was there when I purchased it.

No. iOS 6 does not work perfectly fine. It freaking messed up my ability to send MMS messages. The end.

It's a matter of opinion that iOS 6 works fine, but it is a matter of fact that google maps is no longer integrated, that facebook hammers you with advertisements, and that there has been many reports of lost functionality.

Just wondering if you had any ability to restore to ios 5.1.1? My iphone4s went into recovery mode while I was attempting to update to ios6, through iTunes update to 10.7. Everything froze, when my iphone went into recovery mode. Itunes also did not complete the update to 10.7 and is currently still on 10.6 and won't update to 10.7. iTunes is telling me to restore my iphone. So I'm wondering what version I'll end up with when I restore and is that going to be compatible with iTunes 10.6? Also, how am I supposed to get ITunes to update to 10.7? When I click on the update nothing happens. I synched my iphone with iTunes prior to attempting the update. All my apps, songs, etc. are still on iTunes under 10.6. I'd like to know that restoring my phone won't further screw things up and cause me to lose data on iTunes. Apple was no help to me in trying to recover data from my iphone. It took two weeks to solve that issue. Now this.

What error do you get when you try to update iTunes to 10.7? What kind of computer and operating system? What Update are you clicking on? The Update button on the screen updates the iPhone, not iTunes. To update iTunes you need to use the Check for Updates on the iTunes Help menu (Windows) or the iTunes menu (Mac).

Updating iTunes will not affect your content or your iPhone backups. Only the app is updated; all data remains in place.

I deleted my iphone data and restored network setting directly from my iphone 4 so it could stay on iOS5.1 rather than upgrading to iOS6. Worked perfectly.

THANK YOU, bwalton, for the first truly helpful answer. I am not the OP, but I had the same problem (never went to 6, would rather not right now, but I was having sync issues) and this solved it perfectly.

I hadn't realized you could delete everything from the phone (though it makes sense), and now I'm happily adding a playlist to an effectively restored 4S
