Duplicate photos. Help!

Hey guys. I'm using iphoto as my default photo organizer. I noticed in finder I have a photos folder with what seems to be duplicate photos. Are these truly duplicates or the actual originals? Its a bit confusing how iphoto keeps the original files and the edited ones. I'm trying to tame the beast, but I dont want to delete any photos that I cant get back. I want to preform a full backup as soon as I get these photos under control. So I guess my question is how can I figure out which photos are truly duplicates, and how can I rid myself of them. Thanks 🙂

My Iphoto library has duplicates. I'm trying to weed them out to slim down my library for backup. I'm still running iphoto 4, afraid to update until I have a soild back up thats not full of duplicates. I know not to delete photos from the folders in finder because that can lead to corruption. I've checked into duplicate finding software but it either requires and intel Mac (which I do not own) or a newer version of iphoto (which I have not updated for fear of losing my photos). Any suggestions?
