WiFi disconnected after lock screen (iOS 6)

I work in a place with no cellular reception, so I completely rely on WiFi to receive message, and calling.

Everything was good until updated to iOS 6. The WiFi always disconnected after lock screen. It means that I can't rely on any notification through WiFi now, and since I don't have signal, basically I'm completely isolated from the world.

I know this was an issue befor iOS 4, and since iOS 4, Apply decided to keep WiFi connected even when it's locked. I don't know why iOS 6 went back to the old issue again.

Hi, I have the same problem with an iPad Mini,

The WIFI stops working after a few minutes when the screen is locked. I installed the new version 6.0.1 and still the same problem. I did also reset the network settings. But no luck.

I have 2 other iPads but with iOS 5 (my kids), an iPhone 4s and an iPod Touch, and they all have the WIFI icon when the screen is locked and get notifications (on battery mode)

With my brand new iPad Mini when I try to use SIRI on the lock screen, she will remind me that she is not avaliable cause My WIFI is AWOL !!! Therefore is a BUG not a DESIGN issue.

I´m thinking of getting a replacement seeing that Apple is like always ignoring the end user.

As ckuan pointed out, iOS is designed to disconnect from WiFi when the device is locked in order to conserve the battery. There are two workarounds, however, that may work for you:

1) Set up a VPN connection. When the device is connected to VPN, the WiFi will not disconnect when the device is locked. Instructions for setting this up can be found here: Keep Wi-Fi connected while iPhone, iPod,…

2) Make a blank audio file in a program such as Audacity. Make it for as long as you'd like, but about 5 minutes should work nicely. Sync the audio file into the music app on your device and whenever you'd like to keep WiFi connected, simply play that audio file and set it to repeat. This works because the software is designed so that WiFi will not disconnect while media is playing.

Hope this helps! 🙂

you know guys what was difference and same in iOS 5 & iOS 6? both are disconnecting wifi when locked or in sleep mode, but the "DIFFERENCE" is you can get notified in iOS 5.x.x but on iOS 6 you will not & Never unless you wake the phone or plug your device in Computer,

Restoring to new phone, Hard reset, changing to WPA, WPA2 from blah blah blah will never fix this frustrating ridiculous problem, unless get the update for next iOS,

I take the speedtest on iOS 6 and im getting 10mbps, but in iOS 5 its 30MBPS, looks like this is a software problem and need to update by apple,

This is also not true. My iPad 4 is plugged in, the screen sleeps (auto-lock, I don't lock it manually) and when I wake the device wifi needs to reconnect. Apps like Stitcher inform me that I'm not connected and audio stops once the buffer runs out. It's nice that Apple is trying to save my battery for me, but when streaming audio over a network while doing other things this is very irritating. Let me worry about my own battery, especially when it's plugged in please. I'm pretty sure they know that keeping the screen awake in order to keep wifi connected will use even more of my precious battery. This makes me think (hope) it's a bug that will be fixed.

Have done so, and thanks for the reply. Just having trouble understanding if and why it is actually designed to disconnect even while plugged in, or if this is a bug, or maybe something screwy with my ipad or network.

Of course I'd prefer to decide on my own if it stays connected even while on battery, as I don't yet live in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where power sources are scarce, but if I can at least get it to remain connected when its plugged in I'll be happier :)

Hi, I was having a similar problem with my ipad 4 with iOS 6.0 in a hotel with the wifi disconnecting. I had my auto lock set for 2 minutes and whenever I let the 2 minutes run out, the ipad would shut the screen down and disconnect from wifi. I simply set auto lock to never and now no disconnection from wifi. That may not help everyone but my wifi is still connected after 30 minutes.
