Can I restore a file to my desktop instead of replacing the current file?

I want to check an older version of a database, but I don't want to replace my current copy which contains new information.

Is there a way to bring a previous copy of the file forward so I can work with it?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
