Is there a way to get my old texts and imessages off my old iphone onto my new iphone 5

Your messages are part of the iPhone backup. If you restore your new phone to a backup of you old phone your messages and other data and settings will transfer. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109. This shows what is included in the backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946.
I backed up my old iphone on my computer and tried restoring and it restored different apps then were on my phone and did not have my old messages on there. So now I am trying icloud with that work too. It's saying it's going to take an hour to restore
Restoring from and iCloud back can take a while, especially right now. The next wave of preorders are being received right now and I suspect there's a lot of people restoring from their iCloud backup right now.
So what did I do wrong when I backed up from itunes?
Don't know. Should have automatically backed up your messages. If you still have the phone you could delete the old backup (by going to iTunes>Preferences>Devices, clicking on the most recent backup and clicking Delete Backup), then back up again by right-clicking on the name of your phone on the left side and selecting Back Up. If your iCloud backup doesn't work, try restoring to the new backup in itunes.
