iPhone 5 dead, but... Apple Phone Support sorted!

My phone was at 30% when I plugged it in last night, and when i plugged it in, it made the charging sound and showed the battery icon as per normal. When I woke up this morning it was dead. I tried it on a different socket, tried the Lightning cable in the USB port, still nothing. I was convinced it was a lignting cable issue, as others have reported. I filled in the Apple Support request for a "call me now" clicked next and my phone rang! I'm talking within a second or so at the most. I spoke to a very nice lady who asked me to try a reset (hold in both buttons for 20 seconds) "yeah, like that is going to bring it back to life". Anyway, up pops the Apple logo and my phone shows fully charged. So no idea why my phone had died over night, as it was fully charged, but just being put down to a 1 off glitch for now. Very impressed with the response of Apple support, which save me a trip to my nearest Apple store.

Great outcome.

Thanks so much for this! I had the same issue just now, but after doing a reset, it showed a full battery. What a weird problem!

I got my iphone 5 yesterday and i had the same issue. Charged the iphone before going to bed and it turned on for awhile asking me to connect it to itunes, but since it was late I was planning to synch my iphone in the morning, I put it to sleep and i went to bed. When i woke up this morning my phone was dead. And the hard reset didn't work. neither recharging it or connecting it to my macbook pro. it's just dead 😢

any of you experienced this before?

I have owned my Iphone 5 for about 3 months. Last night it was working just fine. I took a few pictures and played with the camera a bit, then set it down for the night. The cellular was turned off. The wifi was on. This morning the phone was dead and did not respond to my intuitive maneuvers. However, when I came across this post, I held the two buttons down for 10-15 seconds and voila, the apple logo came on and all appears well, so far.

Does anyone know the cause for this? I'd be most interested. ? Software vs hardward flaw?

Thanks in advance.

If you read my posts on this thread, Apple support had me wipe my phone to reimage it, supposedly eliminating software problems. When my issue happend after the wipe, they concluded it was a hardward problem and replaced my phone. I've had the replacement for about 6 weeks now with no other issues.

In my case, it would appear it was definitely a hardware issue that was resolved by replacing my hardware.

my phone was about 40% power, took it out my pocket when i got home, put it on the kitchen counter. when i looked at it again it was dead. strange but put it on charge and nothing. left it for 20min... nothing. Found your post and boom, its working. thanks! (i only held both buttons for about 10 seconds though)

Upfront many thanks....Reading your Note cooled me down instantly....my iPhone 5 went down, too. I only have it for 14 days.

Anyway, before it died (fully charged) I connected an Apple VGA adapter cable to it (which was not yet plugged in at the TV)... A message came up: ...does not support the device...or similar and then went dead.

Only the sharing the comments and suggestions in this very support community saved me trip to the shop, thanks again.

By the way, that VGA adapter still works fine with my iPAD 2 and my TV.

Thank goodness you too time to post the solution your research provided...thank you! So mine was working fine, sent a text, got home, phone dead. My heart almost stopped and then reason kicked in so I went online to search for possible answers and found your solution. It worked! What is interesting is that the posts on this issue go all the back into 2012, all having the same problem. I hope Apple is working on a 'fix' because until I know it has been addressed by Apple, it leaves me in constant fear it will happen again and the current 'fix' doesn't work.

Thank you for posting your solution. My phone as at 10%, I plugged it up for 2 hours and came back to a dead phone. This is the 2nd time this has happened. The first time was a week after the iphone 5 was released. They made me send it back and then they sent me the wrong SIM card. Took another week to get that straight. It was just a hassle. So tonight's incident immediately frustrated and irritated me. I googled it and this post was the top hit. 14 seconds after reading your post, my phone powered on. Thank you again for sharing.
