Computer navigates the internet slower--A recent problem

I've recently developed a problem with certain websites after installing Norton Firewall and Virus Protection. The problem is that some website do not come up (I've noticed these to be graphic-intensive web sites) or will actually boot me off the internet (external cable modem). Before the install I simply used Norton's Anti-Virus, and it gave me no problems; but upon renewal of this software I went ahead and downloaded Firewall--you know, to make my compy extra safe.

Since the problem developed I've turned the settings of the firewall off completely and am now running just the Anti-Virus software. It hasn't helped at all. I should note here that I've noticed advertisements rarely come up anymore. Sometimes I will only get an HTML code where the ad should be.

Thanks for your help.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Whilst I do not wish to be unhelpful many(most?) Mac users use the robust free Firewall that is included with OS X (System Prefences > Sharing pane) so there won't be a great deal of experience here (I'm sure someone will correct me now 😉 ).

May I suggest that you use Symantec's free online support available here. They've taken your money and slowed your machine up so they must be in a position to assist you.

Norton branded products never get good press on these forums - because of this type of problem (and worse)!

To keep your computer safe ensure that you regularly check Apple Menu > Software Update for security patches. Apple regularly releases these updates to patch flaws where the (zero known of) Mac virsues could enter your system by.

I don't have any AV software - Once the first real Mac OS X virus is discovered I will then investigate the options. The virus threat at present is to Microsoft Office scripting products and known security holes in iChat AV and Bluetooth in OS 10.4 (which I believe have now been patched). When you install any software on a Mac it asks for the Admin password. I'd be graetful if someone corrects me.... but so far the Mac viruses have required the administrator to install them on the Mac (although admitedly under the guise of another function). Some would consider this a slack attitude but I call it risk management. I read several mac blogs throughout any week and in combination with my Router and OS X's firewalls and with the latest security updates installed I'm content with my situation.
