This is a really getting on my nerves.

What do you have set in Finder > View menu > "Arrange by"?
That's set to None... I've always set that to None.
On "Show View Options", I've changed it to any other setting then back, just to hit "use as Default" but it still does it. Is this something I have to set on a folder by folder basis? It's really annoying.
It may be some corruption in Finder prefs, let's rebuild them...
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash thise file:
com.apple.finder.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
Thanks, MacJack.
I thought this fixed it, but it is still doing it.
When I drag a file into a folder and then open the folder, I find that the Finder rearranged my icons.
It also happens in plain sight:
With a folder that I have in my sidebar, I drag a file into the sidebar icon and Mountain Lion arranges the icons I had just arranged! 😐
So, no one else is having this issue?
I guess I have to wait for another "supplemental update" from Apple... or an actual update to Mountain Lion.
😟
What happens if in Finder view you "arrange by name"?
"arrange by name" does exactly that, but that's not what I want. I want my icons to be free of any auto arrangement.
Setting "none" for both "Arrange By" and "Sort By" view options still rearranges icons.
Yes, I just wanted to check. I understand, I use "arrange by none" and can't recreate your problem.
Let's try Finder plus Sidebar prefs...
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
Thanks, MacJack... still the same results.
It even rearranges icons in windows when I use some applications (like RealPlayer Converter) to save a file in a folder. When I check the folder, everything is rearranged.
I will wait for the next OS update to see what happens.
I don't know if this'll help you or not, but for me I found that if I move more than one item at a time I have the same problem, so (obviously) I move one file/folder at a time.
A pain, but it works for me.
Cheers
Bump+ I am having the same problem... this is new to Mountain Lion and it's driving me crazy, since I manually arrange files in folder to track what I need to work on and in what order.
I really want Apple to stop 'improving' the Finder or at least provide an option to disable all 'auto arranging'. To be clear to earlier posters... the problem occurs when you drag/drop multiple items into a folder (which also happens, implicitly, when you save multiple attachments from an e-mail), regardless of whether or not one has 'Arrange by' set to 'None'.
Of course, we can find a work-around, but this is yet another frustrating issue I've had since upgrading to ML... you know, in a 'First World Problems' sort-of way 😉
Same issue. I have an external media drive with a many folders. I have the folders arranged according to my needs. The view option is set to "none" for both "arrange by" and "sort by."
Sometimes, after I import CD's into iTunes, I open the media drive and all the folders are suddenly arranged alphabetically. This is horribly annoying as I then have to spend 15 minutes rearranging the folders.
This has only started happening in Mountain Lion. It has never happened in a decade of using an external media drive in either OSX or OS9.
Apple need to fix this as it is a major issue/bug.
This just started happening to my icons in the last week. Nothing changed about my preferences and I don't use an external hard drive. If anyone has work arounds until this bug gets fixed I would appreciate hearing about them.
The only thing that has worked for me is to use Onyx to remove .DS_Store files from each affected window. In the Maintenance menu, click the "Appearance of folders' content" box, then choose the affected folder and have Onyx rebuild the folder if this is your main finder window; you can add subfolders if you are looking only at data storage folders. This is a finer tuning than deleting all .DS_Store files (which has been problematic for me for an earlier Mountain Lion version than 10.8.2) and has worked for me. However, you should heed the warnings that Onyx gives you. This might or might not work for you.
Thanks for the tip relh! I tried the way you suggested....not a d*** change, the problem (pretty much the same as described above, in my case triggered any time any app saves a file in my Downloads folder it gets a hit by the convenient "arrange by name" option in Finder....)Desperate in my anger I continued reading... and I found this:
http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/
I think the problem has been solved so far for me.....we'll see what happens in the future. But for now it looks OK. If anything I will post here, because many people are suffering in silence, not knowing what to do, as I understand.
Hope this helped a bit!
