Apple TV stuck on What's New or Verification Required screen after v5.1 update

I have this problem too. It actually seems like the "What's New" screen is in front of the regular menu/navigation.

My original remote broke, and I've been using the Remote app. If I swipe left and right, i can hear the clicks. If I press to select, it sounds like I might be choosing an item from the menu... which I can't see because the "What's New" screen is in front and won't go away!

Try holding menu and left arrow for 6 secs on the remote in case AppleTV thinks it's paired to another remote and is ignoring yours.

Anyone found a solution to this yet? I'm experiencing the same problem. The "What's New" page is overtop the menu and I can't seem to get rid of it.

Yup, same problem here. Even unplugged and restarted, same issue.

Edit: Oh wait, it just went away on it's own after 20 minutes. Weird.

I'm experiencing this issue as well after I updated. I'm going to take @cre618 advice and wait 20 minutes...

it went away after 5 mintues. if you experience this issue just hold tight, it will go away.

Very frustrating and even more confusing!!! Every time I unplu my apple TV I get the same screan and the same problem!! Is apple goofing to fix this? I hate that I have to wait sometimes up to twenty minutes each time I want to use my apple TV!!! I hate when they do updates and then they cause all sorts of issues that take forever to fix!!!

mine goes away after about 5-10 minutes. Probably just downgrade it for a while until they upgrade it again to get rid of this.

I am having this problem. can't find the physical remote, using the ipad remote app to control the apple tv which worked until this upgrade happened. I don't leave my apple tv powered on, only power it on when I want to use it. And this What's New seems to keep coming back on each power cycle. Seems like a bug.

Waiting work but it is more than just a couple of minutes. I would say mine went to the regular menu after 7 or 8 minutes.

This is unacceptable. Such an easy and overlooked fix. Minus one apple.

Same issue here, infact my appletv even purchased some movies because it was controlling the menu behind the scenes. Doesn't anyone from apple keep an eye out on these boards? such a horrible experience! I hope I get a refund for that movie I can't watch because it's playing behind this stupid What's New screen.

Same problem...not to mention random freeze ups since update!! Apple is starting to resemble Microsoft.....stuff doesn't work!!

I am having the exact problem, seems to be a bug with Apple's new software update. Can't believe something so minor could be overlooked.

The only solution I have found is it wait it out. It can be anywhere from 5-20 minutes. So turn your Apple TV on and go get some coffee, cook or never turn it off. No more Steve = no more control.
