Can I upgrade my iPhone to iOS 5 if I'm not ready for iOS 6?

I've been lagging in updating my iPhone and I'd like to keep it that way to an extent. My iPhone is currently only runing iOS 4, but I'm interested in upgrading to iOS 5. I don't, however, want to go to iOS 6 yet. iTunes only asks me to upgrade to iOS 6. Is there a way to upgrade instead to the latest iOS5 version?

iPhone 4, iOS 4.2

There is no supported way to downgrade software, which is what you are trying to do. While you are upgrading from where you are, it is less than the current version. Apple does not suport the installation of software other than the current version.

Thanks guys. That's a bummer. The first release of a new version of any software is always going to have the most bugs and awkward functionality/useability of new/replaced features. On the other hand, the final update of the previous version will always be the most stable and refined. You'd think Apple would appreciate this and support that last version until an update or two comes out for the newest version, yeilding the best user experience, but I guess their "My way or the highway" mentallity has gotten in the way here.

There are sites that provide links to Apple's servers for direct download of earlier versions. If you do a web search for "iOS direct download", you should find them. Make sure of the following two things:

1) you get the correct download for your model of iPhone and

2) the download link starts with "appldnld.apple.com". Any other site will be unauthorized and could put your iPhone at risk.

Once you get the update file, install it by Option-clicking the Update button (Shift-click in Windows) in iTunes and choosing the downloaded file.

Regards.
