iTunes movies play audio with no video

iTunes playback plays audio track but no video.

Upgraded to iTunes 10.7 (21) and Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 this weekend (yes, it is an unusual combination) and video doesn't display. Not movies nor video podcasts. The audio of the movie or video podcast plays fine, and the progress bar at the top of iTunes ticks each second away fine too. Video files play fine in the Finder (in space bar's QuickView).

I reset the SMC and NVRAM to no effect.

When I boot-up from my backup hard drive, video plays perfectly. I believe this rules out hardware problems.

What could the problem be? Thanks.

Even though this is content that has played before, normally, by way of experiment try restarting iTunes in 32-bit mode and seeing if the content will play for you then. For instructions see the following document:

iTunes for Mac: Older media files may require iTunes to reopen in 32-bit mode

If the content does start playing properly then, restart iTunes in default (64-bit) mode again. Are the items working normally now?

I solved my problem! 🙂

I started-up off of my back up hard drive, downloaded the Mac OS X 10.7.5 Combi system update, and used it to reinstall the system update onto the primary hard drive. (I suppose you could run it from the primary hard drive if necessary.)

Other remedies that did NOT work:

  • run DiskWarrior to rebuild directory
  • startup from backup hard drive and reinstall iTunes 10.7 update
