Q: I followed the instructions to the T - and still no ability to use the f-keys.

I have reviewed the system preferences  for keyboard but I see nothing out of the ordinary.  Any one have different step x step instructions?

imac, 2g memory 350gb

    In order to help I need more information about which iMac you have, the OS version, and the type of keyboard that you are using.

     

    If you are using an Apple aluminum USB or wireless keyboard then you need to press the 'fn' key similar to a shift key before pressing the dual purpose function keys across the top row. For example, pressing the F1 key will decrease my display brightness, however if I hold down the 'fn' key while pressing the F1 key then the F1 key function will activate instead.

     

    If you want to change this behaviour, simply open the Keyboard System Preferences and select the 'Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys' option as shown below.

    Yes.  I understood that Fn key is used in conjunction but in either case using the "use all f1, fw etc...." selection, the function keys do not work.

     

    Further reading indicated that I need to update from 10.5.8 to 10.6, but since 10.6 must be purchased, I guess I'll need to live with no F-keys
