iMac restarts randomly?

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:

Parallels

Virtual CDRW

Tether

Telestream Audio

Soundflower

Ambrosia audio driver

If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you uninstall all of them according to the developers' instructions, reboot, and see whether there's any improvement. If there is, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, to identify which one is at fault.

Please post a panic log showing no third-party kernel extensions loaded.

We've got 3 identical iMac 27" computers on 10.8.2. All of them have the same crash-on-sleep issue on the ATI graphics adapter. This doesn't look like a hardware failure (or Apple does have a series fault on the graphics adapter). Only 3rd party kexts are VMWare fusion drivers. One FW external disk, nothing on usb. One external Monitor connected via DisplayPort to DVI Apple adapter.

This has been happening to my iMac too, I thought I was the only one the random unexplained restarts was happening to.

I have a mid-2011 imac 21.5". One day my computer crashed and rebooted 5 times, so I brought it to Apple which they then wiped it clean and said it would be fine, which it wasn't. As soon as I put my stuff on the computer and was surfing on Safari it randomly happened again. So I brought it back to Apple where they said that they would bring it to be diagnosis. They took the computer for 5 days and when they gave it back they said that they ran it through "stressful applications" and they couldn't repeat the problem. But they did suggest that it might be the new ram that I recently purchased for the computer (ram that is manufactured by Apple). First they said that I should stick to the old ram and after explaining that the reason I got the new ram was because it was running slowly with the applications that I use daily (Adobe Creative Suite, iMovie, Final Cut Pro) and they just shrugged.

Since this has happened I have been testing the ram and have came to the conclusion that my ram works perfectly normal and that from others on the forums that maybe there is an issue with iMac holding 16gb of ram. Which should be fixed on Apple part since buying ram is not on the cheap side.

However the random shut downS have stopped now that I have less then 16 gb of ram in my computer. Unfortunately when I talked to Apple on what they could do if the reason for the shut down is not because of the ram, they just told me that I probably didn't put the ram in correctly (which in turn I corrected that no random beeps accord when I turned the computer on) and then proceeded to give me around about answer that no they couldn't do anything since they couldn't "re-do" what happened, as if I would lie about this.

When farther more pressing them on if I could just get the iMac replace, again there was a no one Apple side.

Since this has been happening I have been avoiding first placing the full 16gb of ram in because I do not want to loose my work if I am working on an application such as Final Cut Pro or Photoshop and my computer shuts down. I wish Apple would do something because I can't afford to not be able to use these applications as well as not afford to loose my work.

I have the same problem. I've had this iMac for a while now and had no issues before OSX Lion. I'm running 10.8.2 on a 27" refurbished iMac from 2011 I think.

UPDATE!

I brought my computer to Apple and they finally decided that it wasn't the ram but the logic board. They are replacing it now, hopefully when its done my computer will be able to hold the max capsity of ram and work normally.

New Update:

I got my computer back after being at Apple for two weeks. They replaced the logic board as well as a missing piece that monitor the temperature of the computer. My iMac has the original ram in it and now doesn't turn on. I have no clue what on earth is wrong with my computer but I am going to bringing it to an Authorized Apple Service Repair so that some new eyes can look at it and also because I have lost my trust that the Apple store is going to fix it especially since they had it for two weeks and made it worst.
