I'm trying to add some filters to some some imported text files from Photoshop, but they don't work so well so I need to import them as transparent video files. So, how do I export the text as a ProRes file from FCP with a transparent background so I can re-import it and add the video filters?
I've tried fiddling around with the alpha channels but the background always seems to be black.
thats not the way to do it
use one of the many text plugins in Final Cut and add any effects to the text clips, it could be easier to create animated text. It takes me 10 seconds to place some text over a clip an have it ripple, jump, or explode over the screen.
I can't use the text plugins. I need to create authentic looking text from old movies which can only be done accurately and exactly in Photoshop. It's for a film restoration project. Some of it isn't even "text" it's graphic stuff created in Photoshop.
You don't export the files as a ProRes clip.
Place your text on a transparent background and export from PS as .tiff or .png stills. They will composite automatically. You can set the default length required in FCP's User Preferences...
You must do this before you import the files.
The only way to have video transparency on export/import is to use ProRes4444.
Makes files huge.

How do I properly set up and export a transparant ProRes4444 file? I've just tried a few with different settings and same again, a black background.
I'm trying to understand the need for the PR 4444 export/import.
Have you actually edited one of the PS files to v2 (with an image on v1) to confirm that you don't have transparency? Or are you seeing this black background in the viewer or on the TL but without an image on the track under it?
In PS, if you saved either as a single text on transparency or multiple layers with graphics, I can't see why you'd lose the alpha channel bringing it into FCP in the first place.

I've imported some PNG images into FCP and after some experiemntation I've now worked out that by changing the settings to Millions+ and the composite mode to "add" I am able to export a transparent background video.
How to create transparent background video?
