Wifi Autologin option removed in IOS 6—but I _have_ to use Safari to authenticate

Hi, folks. IOS 6 wifi settings keep the Autojoin network option but dropped the Autologin network option that used to be there. So when I connect to my business network my authentication page pops up. Great--I'd love to use that. BUT: our authentication server always pops up a second window to finish logging me in. The IOS wifi login page does not allow popups.

This is why we use Safari to log in--we set it to allow popups and then we can click the "Agree" on the additional popup window (tab).

I can't do that now, because the wifi login window won't produce the popup window, and when I click "Cancel" and go out over to Safari, it can't even try to connect--wifi access has been canceled as well.

Soooo...any workaround? I'd love to hear it. I don't have control over IT here, so reconfiguring our authentication server to operate without the popup window isn't an optioin.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 4. My university requires you to open safari to complete the login process. Without the auto-login toggle switch when i connect there is a roll-up window that titles Log In and after a while a pop-up says an error occurred. I think the only way to fix this problem is if apple puts the auto-login toggle back on wifi settings.

Hi, just came across the below workaround in another thread that works for me. Apple need to fix this asap, but at least this workaround may help in the mean time:

1. Settings>>Safari>>"Clear History" also "Clear Cookies and Data" (not sure if this step is actually required or not)

2. Turn Your Cellular Data Off

Settings>>General>>Cellular>>Cellular Data (OFF)

3. Connect to your desired Wifi network

Settings>>Wi-Fi>>(Your Network Name)>>HTTP Proxy(Auto) + Leave URL empty

Login screen should pop-up, but now it should direct you to your usual authentication page.

4. Turn Your Cellular Data back on (just to get you back where you started)

Settings>>General>>Cellular>>Cellular Data (On)

Hope that works for you too.

I have a similar issue logging into our corporate network using Wi-Fi on iPad 3 after upgrading to iOS 6. We use SonicWALL to authenticate user login to Internet service and get a Safari-looking window to login to our SonicWALL and even though pop-ups are allowed in Safari settings, using this form results in a "Failed to open the SonicWALL user status window. To get access you will need to ensure that pop-ups are not blocked for 192.168.xxx.xxx"

Yea, very annoying! WTG Apple!

My workaround which may help you is this:

1. Obtain the URL of your user status window. This is the window or pop-up that would normally come up after logging into your firewall for Internet access. Ask your network admin if you don't know it. For example, SonicWALL default for me is:

http://192.168.1.1/loginStatusTop.html

2. Create a Safari bookmark with this URL from step 1.

3. Connect to wi-fi, enter your login information into the annoying page that comes up. When you get the notice of "Failed to open the ***** user status window...." DO NOT HIT OK TO DISMISS IT!!!

4. Press your home button to jump to Safari and launch the bookmark you created in step 2. Hopefully you'll see the status window and you'll be logged in and ready to go.

This works for me and the only issue I have now is that my connection seems to time out after 5 min whether I'm active or not. Very annoying and still needs fixed by Apple ASAP!! But at least I'm able to get and send my mail. Just getting tired of repeating steps 3 & 4 above all day!

Concerning the iOS6 problem, a consultant and I spent many hours on the phone with our firewall vendor (SonicWall) to try and figure out a workaround. Here is what we came up with:

1. iOS devices when connecting to a wireless antenna immediately attempt to "phone home" by connecting with two web sites. They are:

gsp1.apple.com

www.apple.com

Since Apple removed the ability to disable the "Auto-Login" switch in iOS6, the iOS6 devices activate whatever security measures are in-place in the corporate environment. In our case, it is a SonicWall appliance. We were able to confirm this by capturing packets from failed login attempts and that is where we saw the reference to those two web sites. We exempted these two sites from being filtered which solved the first half of the problem.

2. After taking care of part 1, our devices locked up when displaying our acceptable use policy pop-up screen. We tried a few things that didn't work and eventually disabled that pop-up screen. After that, everything worked. To cover ourselves, we added a line to the authentication page stating, "Clicking Login means that you agree to abide by our acceptable use policy."

My suggestion is that everyone encountering this issue with iOS6 should try to exempt the above 2 web sites from your firewall.

Apple still hasn't put forth a good solution to their captive browser window problem. My permanent workaround was to set up a reservation for the iPads in DHCP using the iPads' MAC addresses, and allowing traffic to apple.com on standard http ports. Now when an approved iOS device hits our wi-fi, it is allowed to connect, phones home to Apple, then the user can leisurely open up Safari to login to the SonicWALL if and when they want to hit approved sites per user's access.

It's really nice of them, but I noticed that on the different networks you either get auto-login, or you don't. I use the campus wi-fi, but there are two types of it - one is for my job, another one is for residence halls. Now the wifi auto-login is not constant, and I cannot understand why. Sometimes the toggle is there and sometimes it is not. Do you have an answer?
