Internal speakers not working on iMac.

I am suddenly not getting sound through my iMac speakers. In system preferences / sound, the speakers are not listed as a device for sound output, although headphones are and the headphones do work. When I restart the machine the start-up fanfare does come through the speakers. I am still using OS 10.6.8.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to restore my sound, please?
