There is a Lightning to 30 pin adapter available now. That should allow for charging with old cable adapted for the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 comes with a USB to Lightning cable. If you have a car charger with a USB port, you can use it.
The USB to Lightning adapter does not come with the iPhone. It is an extra cost accessory.

I am talking about the cable that comes with the iPhone, not an adaptor. This cable is included in the box. It is what you use to charge the iPhone with the wall charger that comes with it, or to connect it to a computer. One end of the cable is USB, the other is Lightning.
If you have a car charger that has a USB output, just plug the USB end of the cable that came with the iPhone into it, and the other end into the iPhone.
This will do the job for you:
I tried using 2 different authentic Apple Lightning cables in the USB port of my at&t car charger and and it didnt work.
Can you elaborate on "it didn't work"? Did you get an error message, or did it just not charge it at all? Did the battery icon not switch to the charging mode?
I just tried it with an old Griffin car charger and the cable that came with the iPhone 5 and it worked fine.
Itb didnt charge at all. Didnt even acknowledge it was plugged in. It is the car charger I got from at&t when I first got my iPhone 3g so maybe its just the charger.
Its probably the car charger problem. I had a belkin 12V car charger and it would not work. I had to buy another 12V car charger. I am not sure if the ampere is the problem, but I made sure that the newer charger had a 2 amp rating.
I just ordered this from Amazon. It has 2 USB slots, one dedicated to apple products and one for non-apple products but I think Apple will work in either slot.

I purchased a Belkin 2.1 amp Charger with one USB port. I just tested it with my USB to Lightning standard iPhone 5 cable and it worked great!
Isn't it kinda reduculous that I can't just but a car charger with the same lightening connector already on it. I don't have an old USB car charger so it will now cost me $50 to buy the USB car charger and then a lightening charger cord. Why can't I jsut spend $30 and get the whole thing??? I'm not real happy with this new iphone change.
Texasgirl97: You do not need a car charger "with a Lightning connector on it". Car chargers have a USB port; all you have to do is use the cable that came with your iPhone 5, which has a USB connector on one end (plug it into the car charger) and a Lightning connector on the other end (plug it into the iPhone 5). Car chargers are cheap, much less than $50 or even $30. I've seen some advertised for around $10. Some even have two USB ports. Extra cables are becoming available now at around $10. Search Amazon.com or other on-line vendors.
Not exactly... some USB car chargers labeled for iPhone do NOT work with the iPhone 5. I guess they had enough power to charge an iPhone 4 but not a 5. We have one of these that was bought last year, and now have to buy another one. I guess you need to look for high current models, like 2A, or one that specifies iPad as that requires high current, if it doesn't specifically say iPhone 5.
I have found that those chargers will actually charge the device, albeit more slowly. And, the device has to be off. But it will be charged. I routinely charge my iPad with an old first gen iPhone charger.
