I have just started using my iphone 5 today and every call has a 1 second delay in audio. i tested it in the house with my son. its dreadful, really off putting when your trying to talk to someone. whats the cure? ive tried reset and turning off and on. removing sim etc etc

I have exactly the same issue, it's the delay you get on a long distance call and very off putting. I have reset twice and not fixed the issue. There is also a sporadic issue that the call becomes very distorted once the phone is held to the ear.
Contact your carrier. It's not a problem with the phone.
Thanks for reply BUT it seems like a hardware issue as the robotic / static voice kicks in as soon as the phone is held to ear. On Speaker it is fine, 3 inches away from ear it is fine, on headphones it is fine but as soon as Proximity software turns off phone light it distorts to an unworkable level.
Hmmm... might be the active noise reduction kicking in.
I'm also having this problem. Dd you determine whether its a hardware or software problem? If its hardware I'm going to see if I can exchange units.
I took it back to Apple Store and they did diagnostic check and saw dropped calls and "an issue" but said to take it to Vodafone store to change SIM. Did that, still the same problem and am having unit swapped out in 48 hours...we shall see. Turns out 2 colleagues are having identical issues???
I have a unlocked 5 and I've tried SIMs from a couple different carriers. All having the same problem. I've made a genius bar appt. for Thursday to see if I can get a new unit.

My son and I both upgraded from 4S to 5 and have the delay problem when answering calls. We never had it before, The only fix is to swipe to answer, count to 3, then say hello.
Ended up going back into Apple and they swapped out the unit.
this is caused by the noise canceling feature on the device trying to differentiate your voice from background noise. if you go to settings---general---accessability---hearing aid--- and turn the hearing aid feature on, this will turn the noise canceling feature off, which will cancel the delay.
i've got the same prob. of call answering delay in iphone 5s..
Go to settings, general, accessibility, and turn bluetooth off. Corrected the problem (at least it did with my wife's iPhone S).
