External SCSI 3GB HD With IIsi

Hello,

I Have a Macintosh IIsi and i need to make a Backup Of my files. i have a 3gb SCSI External Hard Disk but my IIsi, My IIci, and somes other of my mac won't recognise it. The SCSI External HD is formatted with the HFS Format, Not the HFS+ Format. i can use it with my Performa 575 and my Powerbook G3 Wallstreet with no problem. I have tryed to use it with a System 6.0.8 System Disk and i gotted a message. It said i can't use a SCSI Hard Disk with more than 4gb of space with a computer not equiped with a 60840 or PowerPC Processor. the SCSI External Hard Drive Have only 3 Gb so why i can't use It? Did it have a way to use it with my Macintosh IIsi?

Please Help

Thank You.

So you will have to partition that enormous drive, or move to a newer version of Mac OS but -- System 7 requires More than a MegaByte of memory! How could anyone expect to have that much memory in their computer!

Hello Grant,

I have tried this Hard Disk on my IIci With System 7.5 and i don't see it. i have partitioned it with my Powerbook G3 Wallstreet. i made one 800mb Partition and one 2.20 Gb partition but my Mac IIsi and the others still don't see it.

And Hello Jim, i son't have any System on the External Hard Drive but i can install 7.5.3 on it. i need to backup like 60mb of space from my IIsi because the OS(7.0) crashed the other day and i need to reinstall it. i have a lot of extensions and application on it so i don't want to loose it.

Any Others Suggestions?

Thank You

T B,

I think you are on the right track. 7.5.3 will work just fine. An external boot should do the trick.

Here is a link for keyboad commands that might come in handy if needed.

The one you might need most is as follows:

Command + Option + Shift + Delete at Start up = Forces start up drive to go off-line and start up off another drive with blessed system (Grant might add another command for designating the actual SCSI ID of the device you want to boot from.)

Good luck,

Jim

Certain users of Mac OS X discovered that the restrictions on size are more limiting than they appear. This wisdom can help in your case, also. In certain cases for Mac OS X, the entire first Partition AND the Partition Map AND Driver must be contained in addresses which are less than the 8 GB limit.

In your case, the first Partition AND the Partition Map AND the Driver must all use addresses less than the 2 GB limit. Therefore a practical size of 1.8 or 1.9 GB should yield a drive that is mounted on all those systems, including System 6.

You may need to use HD SC Setup, rather than Drive Setup, to format the drive for System 6 and early 7.

ok i have formatted my Hard Drive and i have partitionned it. The result is one 1.4gb Partition and one 1.5Gb Partition. I still can't see it on all my 68030 Mac. i have installed Mac OS 7.5.3 on it with my PowerMac 6100 but when i try to booting from it i got the Happy Mac and a Floppy Question Mark just a few second after. i think i will try to reinstall System 7.5.3 with the << System Software For All Macintosh >> Option.

Thank You
