I am trying to type the Romanized characters for Sanskrit. I can type just about everything I need, but I need to know how to type retroflex letters (the letters with dots under them t, r, d and n).

You are not using the right keyboard. It has to be the ABC Extended layout (not ABC or US or US International). ḍ

Open
System Preferences/Language and text/Input sources and tick top box in left hand pane - this adds Keyboard and Character Viewer to the menu bar under your keyboard layout flag.
Character Viewer has an entire Latin script for you to use
Use the "U.S. Extended" keyboard:
select it in the menu extra area
then option x r
ṛ
option x d
ḍ
etc.
Thank you very much! That was exactly what I needed! I was doing everything correctly with the exception of the extended keyboard.
