Asked a question the other day regarding a/v output to a tv - was turned on to monoprice - and from there to the proper adapter/hdmi cable. Now I have it hooked up I know the tv is getting a signal from my mid -09 M/B pro 13" but still have no a/v.

Then it is working as designed.

Turn off [√] Mirror displays

Full Screen anything

The picture above shows you where to change mirroring. In the bottom left corner of the Displays system preferences, it says Mirror Displays.

You obviously have audio/video (a/v) because you can see the video (you said you can see yourself dragging things there) and probably hear the audio. What are you trying to play through the TV? For example, if it's a DVD, drag the DVD player to the TV and play it full screen. If it's a Youtube video, drag the browser window to the TV and play it full screen. If you do it that way, there's no need to mirror.

I think you are doing the video connection correctly, the problem is that Macs did not start supporting audio through HDMI until the 2010 models. Below is a link to an Apple list of Macs that support HDMI audio. If your Mac is too old, you'll need to run a separate audio cable from the MacBook Pro audio-out (headphone) port to the audio-in port on the TV that corresponds to the HDMI port you used.
