I've also had the same problem. I've restored 2 times and followed instructions for network reactivation. No success. I'll have to go to ATT tomorrow to rectify.

So angry. And now the old phone is shut down so we have nothing. Apparently we're not the only ones.
if its an upgrade check with your network provider to see if the sim is active. it can take up to 24 hours for the new sim to activate fully after the old one deactivates. try settings-genereal-reset-network settings
I used the online activation process, it didn;t work, so I called AT&T and asked them to activate it again. MyiPhone5 came up while I was speaking to them. You''l need to give them your IMEI and SIM card numbers.
Sometimes it may take 2 times to turn off/on your phone and restart it. That doesn't mean putting it to sleep and reactivating. Turn it off by sliding the "off" bar, then on again.
As a last resort, go to the AT&T store.
I had the same problem as most here. Spent almost 1 hour on the phone with att. Gave up and just went to the local att store. They replaced the sim card and it all works now. Too bad new users are having this problem. Sounds like the sim card problem is wide spread from the looks of things.

I miss around 5 calls a day and being self employed that means a huge loss of income!
Take the sim card out and put it back in.
