iPhone 5 Verizon LTE problem

I have the 64GB iPhone 5 in white on the Verizon network. Each day at a random time LTE will have a problem where I can't make a facetime call. If I try and run a speed test either my up or down will not complete the test. The only way for me to fix the issue is to toggle airplane mode and as soon as my phone picks up the Verizon LTE signal I can make a facetime call.

I have done some troubleshooting on my own and here are some of those steps and results.

I contacted Verizon and they "rebuilt" my line in their system. I'm not sure what that means, but Verizon assured me it would fix any issues in their systems.

I have the issue on LTE only, 3G and Wifi have no issues with facetime and complete speeds tests every time without issue.

LTE in my area is a full 5 bars and when I'm not experiencing this issue I typically get 10-20Mb down/up

I contacted AppleCare and they suggested I do a reset.

I tried a reset on "Network Settings"

Nothing above has made any progress so tonight I'm trying a full reset on the phone per AppleCare instructions. If that doesn't work I was told to take the phone into an Apple store. The only issue with that is the 1 hour drive one way which I'm trying to prevent.

If anyone else is having the same issue please speak up or point me to a fix you have done.

Thank you,

Tom

There is a critical VZW trouble ticket open on this problem at least in Mass and reports of the same problems in NYC and Kentucky. I have yet to get a solid LTE connection anywhere since getting my phone (iPhone 5) on launch day. Max of 1 or 2 bars and -115 dBm is fairly common. Transfer rates and horrible and my iPhone 5 is primarily locked on 3G.

Spoke to a nice representative at Apple Care (800-MY-APPLE) and we're going to try to swap the HW on one of my two iPhone 5s to see if there was a bad batch of HW for both my iPhone 5 VZW's. Fingers crossed that this fixes my problem. Interestingly enough, they had no other reports of this problem, so I suggest that you contact them as well to report your problem if you're having an issue.

I appreciate the heads up on the other thread but I'm not experiencing the same issue. My LTE signal stays at 5 bars and doesn't drop to 3G yet I still experience slowdown and can't complete a speed test or surf the web. Video services stop etc, so my data is effectively gone on LTE until I toggle Airplane mode or turn LTE off and use the 3G network.

For anyone that was following this thread its worth noting that I did a full restore of the phone and I still have connectivity issues on LTE.

Dialing *3001#12345#* on my Verizon iPhone5 brings up "Field Test" mode which shows my LTE signal strength at -82db. After spending a little time on google -82 seems to be a decent signal strength and is reinforced by 5 bars of signal strenth. I don't think the issue is with Verizon's network as they report no issues and the signal appears to be good.

At this point I think I will be scheduling an appointment at the Apple Store. I'm very weary of driving an hour since the issues crops up at a randomly during the day. I'd have a nagging feeling that everything will be working at my appointment which will have to be scheduled a few days out.

Oh well I'll update this thread once I have made some progress.

Tomcali - I would highly recommend you call 800-MY-APPLE and open a case instead of wasting your time with a Genius appointment at the Apple store. I visited the Apple Store and all they did was plug my phone in to a computer, tell me everything was fine, and blame Verizon's network. (If you are experiencing this only in one cell site, I would also contact VZW).

Per my first post I have already contacted apple and they suggested I first do a network reset and then a full restore to try and fix the issue. They said if I still experienced the issue after the trouble shooting steps were completed then I would need to take my phone into the Apple Store.

Pete your experience at the Genius Bar is exactly what I'm dreading. I have had the same LTE issue at two different locations an hour away from each other with varying signal strength at each site but never below 3bars.

I am having the same problem, my facetime LTE will not connect (it does not make any sound when making a facetime call then says 'connection lost' after a couple of seconds). I talked to verizon and they did a "network push" and hard/soft resets, which only allowed for one or two facetime calls. Verizon offered to replace the phone, but it seems more like a software problem.

Switching on and off airplane mode works a lot better than talking to verizon tech support for 30 minutes.

Any ideas or potential longterm fix?

I also live in Syracuse,NY and having this issue. When ever I am out in my neighborhood or even at school, I can never get solid LTE. When ever I move it will switch to 3G or I will have low reception bars. Even at my house LTE does not always work. I had also checked on Verizon's website for LTE coverage and I was in the coverage zone at all times.

Today I went to the Syracuse Verizon store located at the mall and they were not helpful at all besides pointing me to the Apple store. They were not concerned at all with helping me troubleshoot the LTE signal issue and would not replace the Verizon SIM card.

I went to the Apple Store and was amazed by how helpful they were. They listened to me state the problem and asked relevant questions to confirm what troubleshooting steps had already been taken. They agreed that replacing the phone would help me get closer to nailing down the problem. If I can say anything positive about this ordeal so far it's how extremely professional and helpful Apple was during my first experience at their store. I felt like the service received justified the cost of ownership for their product.

Now to the bad news. Replacing the iPhone made no difference in the LTE issue I have been experiencing. The LTE worked for a few hours and then like before it dropped the upload. The only fix is toggling airplane mode and once the phone grabs LTE again it works fine for a hour or more then reverts back to failure (no upload, FaceTime etc)

I'm in the process of grabbing before, during and after screen caps of signal levels, speed tests and FaceTime attempts. To be clear this is issue is not just with FaceTime but its how I've been noticing the problem because I use that app often and it requires upload.

The signal level at my home is approx -85 which should not cause an issue. The signal strength indicator never dips below 4 bars on LTE and it doesn't cycle to 3G so the issue is not with terrible signal strength as it appears some people are experiencing. I'd like to in invite people into this thread who are experiencing this specific issue.
