update 10.6.8 mail doesn't work

I downloaded the Security Update 10.6.8 this week.

After install the are 2 Mail icons. One is a generic "application" icon. The other is the standard "Mail" icon.

The generic "mail" is no functioning.

The standard "mail" will start to open and then give a notice that states:

You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X.

You tried to open Mail cersion 4.5 (1084/1085) in:

/Applications/mail.app

Apple, PLEASE FIX THIS!!! I downloaded Thunderbird as a temp. BUT I REALLY NEED Mail to work.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been fixed yet.

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Some have reported success simply by reinstalling the update.

Or download and apply, or reapply, the 10.6.8 Combo update first, then apply the Security Update again.

I'd suggest starting with the simplest of these fixes, so look them over first.

I wish I'd read this first: being more microsoft savy, I deleted the entire Mail program... thinking if I updated... it would reload correctly.

Now I can't figure how to get it back.....

You can reinstall Mail from optional installs on the 10.6 DVD. Then run the Security Update.

I think I will have to take this into the apple store. My disks say 10.5.7. And say 15 inch macbook pro

I measured across my screen, it seems ( diagonally) to be 15", I'm guessing right disks, but I've done something really really wrong.....

How did you upgrade to Snow Leopard? But they can probably just reinstall Mail for you and then run the update.

I deleated it also. Use Time Machine, enter "time machine" and get mail.

If you havn't been using Time Machine, you just learned a valuable lesson in the imporatance of backing up regularly. Use Time Machine.
