How can I disable over-the-air update?

I do not want to update my iPhone 4 16GB to iOS6 because of the new Maps application. However, my phone downloaded the update without my consent and has inconvenienced me in the following ways:

  1. It's taking up storage space in the Other category, so I had to remove music to improve performance as I was bumping up against available storage
  2. It's placed an annoying red badge on the Settings app

Can I delete the downloaded update and remove the badge?

Try seeing if synchronizing your phone on iTunes solves it, though I doubt that it will since it's already been downloaded, which means it will sit there until you install the upgrade.

The other alternative that comes to mind is that you restore your phone from a previous backup, from before you had the red icon, but again, it probably won't work.
