Trying to configure Icloud, I currently have an icloud.com address. Trying to set up Mail in the system prefrence and checking Mail option insists on creating a new account. How do I configure icloud mail to use the current adtress

If you don't have the icloud.com address defined in the Mail preferences>Accounts, then set up a new one using that address. If it's already defined, you don't need to setup the account again. Perhaps I'm missing some details, if so, please tell us more.
You need to make sure you are logged into iCloud using the Apple ID that the @icloud.com address you want to use is associated with.
You cannot use the @icloud.com email address from any other iCloud account / Apple ID with a different iCloud account / Apple ID.
