I will email Apple about this, hopefully they will try to fix this issue.

Is it something sprint can do? Send a code or something for unlocking the phone? Seems very strange that nobody has "cracked" this...

The same problem with nanosim from Argentina. I went to the apple store New York, show the problem to a genius, and he called a  manager and he change my iphone 5 from sprint to one from AT&T, without making the line!!!

    Every one should do this.

I got a Sprint iPhone 5 on contract and then called sprint and told them that I needed to get the phone unlocked cuz i was going to travel to Mexico City. i did this with my iPhone 4s and I never had a problem with it overseas. Sprint NEVER said they can’t unlock it, in fact the international department was very nice and said "yes, just restore it and you should be fine" i did that and i got a message on iTunes that said that the iPhone was unlocked.

When i called to do the same with the iPhone 5 i got the same response but this time when i did the restore, the iPhone is unlocked message did not come up. i called sprint again and they said that they were having problems unlocking the iPhone 5s and that they send the request to apple but never get a confirmation that the device is unlocked on their end like they did with the 4s.

They told me they would contact me later and eventually a manager emailed me and asked that I do the process again. I had the same result and just left for my trip, when I got to Mexico City I put in the sim card and the phone started working no problem, so i thought that the phone had been unlocked successfully. Unfortunately I have the same problem that you all do and I can’t send sms to anyone.

From what I can tell this IS an apple problem as sprint is more than happy to unlock the iPhone for anyone that just calls them. i think the problem is that apple did not lock the phone from the factory or did it but not completely, and now is not offering a solution to the problem. The sprint manager told me himself that they have no problem unlocking the phone but that the system they have in place to do it is not working with the iPhone 5s.

so i think until apple fixes that and truly lets carriers unlock the phone? We are not going to be able to do anything about it.... All tho if someone needs a test subject to try to fix this??? I offer my phone and will try anything at this point hahahaha

Thanks a lot Willie for your information, it means that the problem concerns more than just us but also every Sprint client who are able potentially to request unlocking their iPhone for international use. I will copy your answer to post in the Sprint community forum, they are monitoring the posts. Apple will have to fix the problem anyway

Every one would do this since a log time ago if we were able to come back in USA every 3 weeks instead of wasting time posting our unheard request ... the point is we cannot like you come back in the shop asking a new one

I had the same problem but was able to find a temporary workaround until Apple/Sprint releases some kind of fix. It's not perfect, but it gets me by for now. worked for me, but I don't know if it'll work for every locale:

I am outside the US and trying to use a GSM SIM card in a Sprint iPhone5 but could not send SMS messages (only receive)

    Try this:

    1. Go to Settings / Messages

    2. Make sure "Show Subject Field" is on

    3. Try sending a message but type your message in the subject heading instead of the main box. The key is that the subject line has to have something in it, even a " " blank space will do

I tried sending it this way to other iphones and smart phones and both the subject and body of the SMS would go through, but to older cell phones only the subject heading goes through, and only the first 39 characters.

Hopefully Apple/Sprint will come up with an actual fix, but I'm hoping this is of help to some people out there

Hi Cj, yes this one works because it's an MMS , not an SMS, MMS sending and receiving works fine

... but sending MMS instead of SMS is more expensive , but yes if you really need to answer to a SMS this is a temporary solution.

  • Coswordo Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

That works for me to, but sending mms is not the same

Its strange, SMS is the oldest way to communicate on a phone.. and it does not work.

I really hope Sprint and apple will work this true very soon, very frustrating to not be able to send sms.

I've Open the case for this specific Issue, call the Call Center, they said they need to double check with Carrier, and able to send me some way to troubleshooting.

So, as few information I've got from both Sprint and Apple, look likes apple will need to take responsible to resolve the case.

Because without any-contract, Sprint cannot support us for this case.

Any other update from you guys will be appreciate.

I'm in the same situation. I've reported this when I created the original post, but so far, no answer from Apple. I agree with you: Apple have the obligation to provide us some solution. After all, their employees misled us to this situation. Simply offering the option for returning the units is not that simple since we're all back to our countries.

Im from Argnetina and im in the same situation, ive bought an sprint iPhone 5 and i cant send sms either. I need a solution, Sprint says they cannot do anything cause im out of contract. Thanks for the help.
