iPhone 5 can't send SMS - gets an error when sending SMS

People - I'm using a Sprint iPhone 5 with my local GSM chip. Everything works fine, except sending SMS.

All basic troubleshooting has been done: checked SMS settings, erased Network Settings, checked SMS Service # through *#5005*7672# and it is fine, restored the phone and re-checked everything above again... and nothing. :-(

Please help?

You will see that a lot's of people has the same pb > http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15927323#post15927323

Apple has sold Sprint iPhone 5 with full price as fully usable with local GSM SIM overseas, if this SMS problem is generated because of the locked slim slot then Apple shouldn't sell for the full price the sprint I phone to people who specified that they are non-US resident and expect to use it in their country.

How can we fix the problem ?

Did you buy the device in the US? If so, Apple has not announced, nor do they offer an unlocked iPhone in the US.

If you bought it in another country, did you actually buy it from Apple?

Something about that comment simply does not add up.

I think you miss the point ...

Yes I bought it in US in an Apple store and yes I know that Apple do not have any factory unlocked offer for the moment dont missunderstand me, I've paid the full price ( like many others ) for an "off contract" iphone after asked to the Apple seller if it was possible to use this iPhone outside US with local carriers ... the answer was yes : " your iPhone will remain locked to the specific carrier in US and be able to use outside US with your local carrier "

and YES it works ... but sending SMS on GSM network don't, so YES Apple should know that issue before selling this model of iPhone 5 to non US resident who will use most of the time on GSM network.

Please note that this problem will maybe concern also the Verizon/Sprint clients who will want to use their iPhone for travel with local GSM sim cards ... it's not a small problem

I think this information is important for people to know and adds up to the story

haha, you just repeat what I said in my previous message ... locked on Sprint in US yes

FYI you can read http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/99345?start=0&tstart=0

... in the begening the Sprint moderator was like you : "it's locked by Sprint" and then post after post he understood that THE OBVIOUSNESS was that it's not locked to Sprint carrier outside US, below his answer :

"... If you are able to use all other services on your Sprint iPhone 5 with an international SIM except sending SMS, then your iPhone is not locked by Sprint ..."

... hope you understand more now

You still do not understand... not certain if it is a language barrier or simply a lack of intelligence.

There are NO unlocked Sprint iPhone 5's available in the US.

The Verizon iPhone 5 does not appear to be carrier locked.

The AT&T iPhone 5 can apparently be unlocked by simply restoring as new in iTunes.

No such option exists for the Sprint iPhone 5 at this time.

Only Sprint can unlock the iPhone and only if you meet their requirements.

I give up with you my friend because you start to be rude and ridiculous ... but you're right on one point my english is really bad ...

Anyway, if you dont understand that we are using Sprint iPhone 5 bought "off contract" with our gsm local carrier sim since we are back in our different countries ( Brasil, Russia ect ... ) and we try to figure out with Apple why SMS doesn't work on GSM network with the A1429 verizon/Sprint model then let's stop our conversation and please keep your lesson of obviousness for yourself thanks 🙂

That article is perfectly in line with what I have already stated.

Apple has made no announcement regarding unlocked iPhone 5's in the US.

Verizon made a decision (or a goof up) to not lock the iPhone 5, whether this applies to all Verizon iPhone 5's or only a subset of them, only Verizon knows.

No such discovery, to my knowledge, has been made with Sprint iPhones.

Apple's stance is, well, they haven't said anything as usual.

The Verizon and Sprint iPhones will not work on other US LTE networks. Once unlocked they may work on US GSM networks. They should work on GSM networks world wide and if they do not then it is up to the user and that carrier to troubleshoot. LTE compatibility is a network by network issue if they are using the supported bands for the device in question.

Diesel,

Facts on the table: If the devices were locked to the operator, we wouldn't be able to even activate the device. Agreed? The iPhone would require a "compatible SIM" to activate it.

On both Verizon and Sprint phones, the iPhone activates, interacts with iTunes, every other function works on the iPhone. ONLY the SMS is not working. This is the part we are trying to figure out - FACTS are saying the device is unlocked. If the SMS is the only thing it is not working, seems to be a glitch from the manufacture side.
