Lost All Safari Bookmarks on iPad

I am using an iPad 2 running iOS 6. This morning all my Safari bookmarks disappeared. My iPhone and Mac still have all of them. My iPad now has zero bookmarks and does not appear to be syncing properly. I have tried rebooting, and I have tried turning off bookmark syncing and turning it back on. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I tried most of these fixes with the exception of doing a restore and nothing seemed to work until I added an extra step after going to iCloud settings. On the Safari setting in iCloud I moved the slider to "off" and when the pop-up came up saying "what do you want to do with previous synced iCloud safari data?" I selected "keep data on my iPad". And with the slider still in the off position, I did a hard shut down and let it stay shut down for a few minutes. Then upon reboot the bookmarks reappeared so I went back to iCloud settings a slid the safari slider back to "on" and chose to " merge" the data with iCloud and couldn't be happier! :)

Steps:

1. Double click the home button (the recently used apps should appear on the bottom).

2. Hold your finger over Safari and wait for the red circle with a white minus sign to appear (if you do not see Safari, scroll right and you will find it).

3. When it appears, press it. This will close out the app and force Safari to start from scratch.

Note: you cannot do this if you have Safari open. I would just do it from the home screen.

I have this problem frequently, I have to go to settings-iCloud settings and 'Back Up Now', wait until that's done then quit Safari completely (double click on home button and delete the app icon from the bottom bar), restart and all's back to normal. Pain in the backside, but works.

I am downloading the new ios, so hopefully that will fix the problem - we'll see...

The exact same thing happened on my iPad over the last day or two … all of my old bookmarks disappeared and were replaced with just the set of default items (Google, Bing, iPad manual, and a couple of others). I couldn't add any new ones at that point, either. Eventually I tried killing off the Safari task in the bottom bar of background apps, and when I restarted Safari thereafter my old bookmarks were back. Definitely seems like a bug, but at least there was a workaround that helped in my case.

I just had this problem and thought I lost them all! The cause and solution was all too simple: As it turns out, I had just the evening before gone through some settings and without thinking of the consequences had disabled Safari's access to iCloud. I had not thought about or remembered that Safari stores your favorites there (so you can sync them with all your devices).

Solution: Re-enable Safari's access to iCloud. (Settings : iCloud ) Woo Hoo!!! They are all back!

(Hope this relieves a little panic is someone else's life.)
