How can I get my iPhone to be recognized in network preferences as it has recently disappeared? Running snow leopard on MBP with 5.1.1 on iPhone?

I've been tether in my iphone to MBP via USB for a while. Tried yesterday but my iphone no longer appears in network preferences. How can I get the iphone to appear as a selection in network preferences?
