I presently have Mac Osx 10.6.8. In order to update to Osx Mountain Lion's latest version, must I update to Mac Osx 10.7 and go through all of it subsequent versions prior? Also, is it advisable to save everything to an external hard drive or memory stick prior to upgrading?

You can upgrade directly to 10.8.2 by purchasing it from the App Store, this assumes that your Mac is compatible with Mountain Lion.
Always backup before replacing your operating system. I would clone the drive before upgrading.
How do you "clone" the drive?
Get an external drive as large or larger than the internal, use Carbon Copy Cloner to make the clone (it is simple), this will be a copy of your internal, you can boot and run from it if you had to. Upgrade the internal and you can run from either until confident in the upgrade.
