what is a remote destop

Apple's software which is an enhancement of VNC - as well as allowing remore screen access you can also install apps, copy files and run reports on the status of remote Macs.

Useful if you want to administer multiple Macs from a single source - although you can do just as well in most cases just by using the screen sharing that's built into OSX.
