I'm sorry for all the frustration out there, but I am a bit relieved that there are other people out there experiencing the same issues.

ARE YOU LISTENING APPLE?!!   There is clearly something going on here with verizon/iphone5.   This phone is my first iphone as well and I can't believe that you guys would put out a product that is flawed like this.

This is interesting.   I was on the phone with Verizon again and the tech actually confessed to me that Apple's antenae has always been inferior to others.   She told me that they had the same issues when the 4s first came out.   Verizon is going to send me a network extender to see if that helps me at home, but that won't change the fact that I get terrible reception around town.  I live in Dallas, not some rural area.

Same issue with me, long time Tmo customers, thought the iPhone and the Verizon service would be great. From the first day poor service even though I am in a strong Fort Lauderdale market, called Verizon 10 times, they try everything from he SIM card switch to the reboot, to the network setting reset. Come Monday morning I am going back to Tmo and my trusty android.

The iPhone 5 is a great device, but not if the call quality is poor and it drops calls.

Anyone reading anything similar with ATT?  Sprint?

I guess it is fair to pin the blame for this on Apple, because other phones work well on the Verizon network.  But I'm so annoyed by the way Verizon handled my problem and account (they even charged the cancellation fee, so I had to go yet another round with customer dis-service to get it removed) that I'd rather blame them.  And I really like the iPhone, which continues to work beautifully on ATT.

Woty87, I hope your situation gets resolved favorably, please post about it.

I have a similar problem with my Verion iPhone5 - I switched from an AT&T iPhone 3GS because of dropped calls and slow speeds, but now the sound quality on calls is bad with the iPhone5 and the call functions don't work.  Voices sound like they're coming from a computer (like that annoying Cher song) and I can't hear people on conference calls anymore.  Also, if I'm on a call and someone else calls me, the iPhone5 won't allow me to end the original call and answer, and merging the calls is only allowed intermittently.  Then, once I put the original call on hold and answer the new one, I can't get back to the original call without hanging up on them both.  iPhone5 is fast but it the telephone portion needs serious help.  I took my 5 back and they gave me a new one, but still same problem.  Verizon says it's Apple of course.  I may switch to the 4S...

RBbeachbum:  I think you're right that the problems we're having don't seem to be widespread, which made me think it could be just a problem with a slightly defective handset.  Two days ago I ended up cancelling my service with Verizon and returning my Verizon iPhone 5 and going back to AT&T.  Becuase there were no AT&T iPhone 5's in stock, I had to go back to using my iPhone 4 and the voice call quality was decent, exactly what I was used to without the intermittent fading/cutting out.  I was able to snag an AT&T iPhone 5 yesterday, but while talking to my folks this morning (they were on a land line), there seemed to be some intermittent fading out of their voices.  It seemed like the voice quality of my iPhone 5 was less than the voice qaulity on the iPhone 4.  So I am baffled at this point.  Now I wish I would have kept my Verizon service and just got a land line through my cable company.  The data service on AT&T's 4G service is only about 15% as fast as the data speeds I was getting with Verizon's LTE service.  I have to say Verizon was heaven so far as the cellular data speeds were concerned.

I like your idea of testing with both AT&T and Verizon for a while.  I wish I would have done that.  Definitely let us know your results.

jbartschi:  Hmmm.  That's not good that you're experiencing the "voice fading" on ATT.  I assumed that it was Verizon\iPhone CDMA phone.  But if you're getting it on ATT\GSM phone, it sounds like Apple may have mis-engineered the new call chip.  I'm still going to conduct my experiment.  If only I could snag an ATT iPhone 5.  I check at 10pm every evening, when stores supposedly offer phones that are available for pick up the next day.  I started checking Friday evening and have come up empty handed so far.  It may be faster for me just to buy it online and wait the three weeks for delivery...

At any rate, I'll post back whenever I'm able to get the new phone.

    Hi all,

So I spent half the day today visiting Verizon and Apple stores. And even though I am wary of the big giants, they both claim that they have not heard of this issue with the poor call quality and the dropped calls. They "claim" that if it was an issue with the phone with all the millions that have been shipped they would have been aware of it.

They said that it could just be a faulty phone and offered to switch the phone for me (of course once they are back in stock). Verizon even said that they would not start my 14 day regret period until after the replacement phone arrives.

I dont know what tothink, but it almost kind of makes sense.

Rbbeachbum,  it took me a few 10pm sessions to get my phone, too.  Partly because it took me a while to figure out that I should just put the thing in my cart, and then when close to putting in the payment info, change delivery to "in store pickup" - and then just pull up the cart starting at 10pm and click the "change store" to get updated store availability near me (it was several minutes after 10pm on a Sunday when it worked).  I hope that makes sense, and assure you it is a better description of the process than I was given by Apple employees.

Stockboss, that's how I ended up getting my iPhone as well.  I also noticed that the inventory was available last night at 9:57pm.  It helps to start checking the availability 3 or 4 minutes before 10pm.  They go fast.

Hi Stockboss. It does make sense. I have it "loaded" in my cart and ready to go. Per jbartschi's suggestion, I'll start checking around 9:45 tonight. I hope I'm lucky.

What Verizon says makes sense. If this was a widespread problem, it seems that there would be 1,000's of posts and 10,000's of views on this thread by now.  I remember when I upgraded my iPhone 3 to 3.1. There was something horribly wrong with the update which caused my phone not to be able to connect to the AT&T cell network. Basically, the update turned my phone into an iPod. There was a thread about this problem that had over 28,000 posts before Apple released 3.1.1 which fixed the problem.

You do raise a good point. It may be my phone. I'll see Verizon tomorrow and order a replacement phone. I'll also ask them not to start the 14 day trial period until I get my new phone. Thanks for the suggestion.

As an update, it looks like we are not alone in this problem, here is another thread on the Apple site

Thanks Sircarlot.  I learned two things on that other thread:  It's also a problem on ATT (at least for the posters on that thread), and the iPhone 5 on Verizon has the old CDMA limitiation:  no talking and surfing at the same time.  I don't know how I missed that story before I dumped ATT to go back to Verizon.

Unfortantely, I've already sold my ATT\iPHone 4, so it looks like I'm stuck with Verizon iPhone 5\CDMA for now.

We too are having the same problems, primarily in our house--dropped calls, don't receive calls, nobody can hear us.  We have two new iphones on Verizon, previously had iphone 4 with very few problems (signal in the house is not the greatest but has never been this bad).  Been Verizon customers for many years.  Verizon says its the phones and have offered to replace them (when they get some in stock).  Called Apple and they seemed to agree.  Seems odd that both phones would be defective but will try the replacements when they come in.  We also have numerous other Apple products (desktop, laptop, ipods, iphones, etc.) so this phone is rather disappointing (as a phone, at least).
