Same problem, so frustrating and sad! And it actually isn't just in my house, today I was shopping in a drugstore, and in a grocery stores where Verizon service was always fine with my old Palm Pre and the calls were terrible and there wasn't an LTE signal (until I went toward the front doors). Put in a trouble ticket with Verizon on Friday, now I have just 5 more days to return phone and get out of my contract renewal.
I'll try the ATT iPhone, when I can get one. But this is worrisome.
I'll throw my name in the hat here too. The wife and I came from iPhone 3GS's on AT&T. Had great coverage at home but I was dropping a lot of calls while on the road (I'm a truck driver). On the advice of many Verizon customers, we switched to Verizon when got the new iPhone 5's. Looking like that may have been a bad move.
Now we have very little signal at home. We either drop calls or have such poor reception we wind up ending the call out of frustration. Reception is also very poor in my town, even though the salesmen at the local Verizon store all say they have an excellent signal all over town. Also, my dropped calls are just as bad on the road (possibly worse). And I've dropped calls in multiple states.
Verizon has given the wife a new SIM card, but so far the signal hasn't gotten any stronger. Verizon tech guy said it may take a day or two for the new SIM card to reset. That sounds odd to me. Seems to me it would reset immediately. He has me hitting ###Call every time I drop a call.
The tech guy is supposed to call me back on Thursday (10/04/12) to see if these problems persist. I'll return here to let you know what happens. Like stockboss, I'm up against the clock to return the phones, cancel my contract, and return to AT&T. But then I doubt AT&T has any iPhones in stock anyway. What to do? *sigh*
I went to the Verizon store today and told them about my problem. They got me on the phone with tech support and they took me seriously because apparently someone in my neighborhood had called with the exact same issue. Anyways, they are going to send me a network extender for free (retail $250) to see if that solves my problem at home. I guess if you threaten to leave for ATT and press them enough, they will give it to you for free. I'll let everyone know how it goes.
I'm just not inclied to go switch to ATT and risk having the exact same problem with them.
It took me several days, but I did manage to purchase an ATT iPhone5 online for pickup today. Inventory is added at 10pm each night, you have to go through the process of having it in your cart and then refreshing the page where you choose the shipping or local store pickup option. At 10:07, there was suddenly pick-up availability last night so I was able to complete the checkout.
This will give me a chance to figure out whether, for me at least, it is a network issue. (I also switched to black 16gb from white). I had already considered switching to ATT to share a plan with family members and stayed with Verizon for the network - my trip to the grocery store yesterday persudaded me a home network extender wouldn't solve the problem, but I hope it does for woty87.
I left ATT last week to get a Verizon iPhone 5. I'm having the same problem. I was driving in an LTE area and a call dropped twice. In both instances, the phone would lose all network connectivity, (no bars, and the zero indicator for internet), then a couple of seconds later switch to 3G, then a couple of seconds later, switch to back to LTE.
In my office, my LTE connection is spotty at best (3G and sometime the zero indicator for no internet). I have a work phone iPhone on ATT and I have a solid 3G signal at the office.
I'm regretting the decision to leave ATT. I never had that problem on that stretch of road with my iPhone 4 on ATT 3G. My question, is it Verizon or the new LTE iPhone? I have until Friday to get out of my Verizon contract, so I'm interested to hear if people on ATT are having a similar issue with their iPhone 5.
So far, so good! My calls while home are clear on the ATT phone. What a relief! I'm not technically oriented, so I don't know why the Verizon version wasn't working well when we are supposedly in a great coverage area. Could have been a "bad" phone, I guess. But I wonder if it could also have been related to the different antenna systems, or the LTE network? Anyway, I hope everyone finds solutions that work. And that I don't have too much trouble returning the Verizon phone and getting my contract renewal reversed (a headache for another day).
Something else I have found that helps. Go into Settings>General> Cellular and turn off LTE. I know you hate to do that on the LTE iphone but it has helped my indoor signal alot in places where LTE is scarce. ( I know the voice calls are not carried by LTE but it seems to help) I have also noticed my phone switching from LTE to 3g and back alot in areas where I know there is good LTE. Not sure what's going on with that.
I'm SO glad to have ditched Verizon. The ATT phone continues to work flawlessly, and I did sucessfully return the Verizon phone at the store (despite being told I'd have to mail it back since I'd ordered online). I'm annoyed at having been charged the $35 restock fee, but it is much less annoying than being stuck with a phone/network that drops calls. And charging me $35 for that after I tried for a week to work it out, and while I have 3 other phones which will be out of contract in a month...not such a smart move business move.
I think HiTekRedNek may be on to something with the "turn off LTE" suggestion - when I had the Verizon phone it seemed to drop calls rather than transition from LTE to 3G. And they've already done a software patch related to using data while on wi-fi. And they have the limitation of no voice while using data, which ATT does not have.
Full disclosure, I'm a trader and have just opened a short position in VZ against long positions in ATT. I won't make or lose a lot on the trade, but it will be more than $35
Stockboss, I am having the same experience you had switching from AT&T to Verizon when buying the new iPhone 5. Although I don't have dropped calls, I only get two bars of signal in my home and the voice call quality is horrible. The voice of people I'm talking to fades out or cuts out quite often and I have a hard time understanding them. I had much better voice call quality on AT&T. It makes me think the iPhones aren't tuned as well to work with CDMA networks. And also in areas with strong LTE coverage, my phone often degrades to 3G (or "o" for first generation data technology). I think I'm going to switch back to AT&T while I'm still within the 30-day grace period.
Bottom line is there are many many problems with this phone

No notifications,off and on sound,wifi issues,phones calls going direct to voice mail with no ring,
apps that seem to be corrupted, pictures that have a bluish color. Maps LOL.
I have 2 imacs, two ipod touches, 4 iphone 5's,2 macbooks, 1 mac book pro, 2 apple extremes,2 ipod classics
2 apple expresses, AND THIS IS THE TYPE OF PRODUCT YOU PUT OUT ON THE IPHONE 5???

I have a two bar LTE signal in my house and the call quality is exactly as you describe "voice of people I'm talking to fades out or cuts out quite often and I have a hard time understanding them." I agree with you conclusion: iPhones aren't tuned as well to work with CDMA networks. However, the fact that this thread has not had many viewers and very few participants makes me wonder. If it is a widespread problem with CDMA iPhones, I'm surprised there are not more people posting about the probelm.
In any case, I'm going to pick up an ATT iPhone 5 and see if it's any better. I'll test with both for a while, then drop the inferior carrier. I'll post the results of my experiment as soon as I get my hands on an ATT iPhone 5.
I too am having MAJOR problems with my phone dropping calls. I purchased my iPhone 5 about a week ago and it hasn't worked correctly from day 1! I have had several Apple products over the years and have always had good experiences with them. However this is my first iPhone. What a disappointment! I have had Verizon Wireless since 1998 (when at that time they were still called Bell Atlantic Mobile) and have never had such problems with dropped calls. I have owned probably 10 different cell phones over the years (all but one being Motorola products) and have just never had any problems with dropped calls, even when the cell phone network was relatively young and running on analog signals. Please if anybody knows a fix for this problem let me know! Although I do like the interface and overall user friendliness of the iPhone it is of little value to me if it fails at its primary task of making successful phone calls. So my first iPhone could very soon become my last iPhone.
