Can you use Iphone gps without using cellular data?

I am traveling to Europe and want to use GPS apps, but do not want to get a data plan. If I shut off the cellular data, will I be able to use my GPS without charge?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6

I think you can. To be sure why dont you turn cellular data off and run the gps app and see if it works BTW gps apps are heavy on battry use

I know they are a big drain... I have a solar charger for the bike ride : ) Hopefully will keep the phone charged. I did try today and it did seem to work... it makes me nervous though... I don't want to come home to a $1000 phone bill!
